Duties:

As a Physical Scientist (Laboratory Technician) within the Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Performing routine laboratory analyses as well as duties related to sample submittal and tracking for analysis in other laboratories and archiving of samples. Performing analyses and tests, which include physical tests, wet laboratory analyses and instrumental analyses.
  • Assisting in determining adequate information has been collected, identify apparent reasons for data anomalies, and correlating the factors that affect the information presented.
  • Writing laboratory reports identifying samples, methods, and procedures used and the results.
  • Participating in managing, maintaining, and analyzing large digital geological and geochemical databases.
  • Preparing tables, graphs, cross sections, and data plots for interpretation of data; entering data into computer formats and using standard programs to perform calculations and generate plots; organizing and sets up files.

Physical Demands:
The work requires some physical exertion and may require prolonged standing in the laboratory environment. Field assignments involve outdoor work where there is considerable walking and climbing over rough or mountainous terrain. The work required physical exertion such as lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crawling in restrictive spaces and defending oneself against physical attack.

Work Environment:
Work is performed primarily in a field, laboratory or office setting. Work performed in the laboratory may involve use of equipment which can result in exposure to dust, toxic chemicals, mechanical and electrical hazards, and noise. Special safety precautions are required including use of laboratory coats, safety glasses, dust masks, gloves, etc. Work in the field involves exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions with exposure to poisonous growth and insects involving a high risk with exposure to dangerous situations.

  • The Recent Graduate Program lasts for 1 year. Participants who successfully complete the Recent Graduate Program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent appointment or a term (1-4 years in duration) appointment without further competition.

Are you a recent graduate who meets the eligibility requirements described below for a Pathways Recent Graduate appointment?

  • You must be a recent graduate who has completed, within the previous two years, an associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution such as an accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum. Note: Certificate program is defined as post-secondary education in a qualifying educational institution equal to at least one academic year of full-time study that's part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum; OR
  • You must be currently enrolled in a qualifying degree program as described above AND expect to complete your degree requirements no later than May 31, 2022. If you do not complete your degree requirements by May 31, 2022, you will be ineligible for consideration under this program; Veterans who were precluded from applying due to their military service obligation begin their 2-year eligibility period upon release or discharge from active duty; however, eligibility for these veterans cannot exceed 6 years from the date on which the degree or certificate was obtained. Qualification Requirements

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

**OR

B. A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-07:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level:

**One year of successfully completed graduate level education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) in physical science or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

**OR one year of appropriate professional experience that is in or related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For GS-09:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:

**Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree in physical science or other directly related field of study or master's or equivalent graduate degree in physical science or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

**OR one year of appropriate professional experience in geologic laboratory science that is equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service, if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Examples of such experience may includecollection, preparation, and processing of geologic samples, laboratory safety, and working independently to meet project timelines. This work experience would have involved one or more specialized areas: (1) laboratory-based biogeochemical analyses, such as the characterization of elemental concentrations or isotopic compositions of soils or sediments, (2) physical characterization of geologic samples for particle size or mineral composition by x-ray diffraction, or (3) organic biomarker and stable isotope analysis.

Above duties are qualifying at the GS-09 level. For the lower grade level, the selectee will perform a wide range of tasks described in the above duties, but at a lower level of work designed to further develop and refine the knowledge and skills of the individual. Assignments will typically combine productive work with on-going training and instruction. Supervision received at the lower level will be closer with oversight and review being provided more frequently.

  • This position is being filled under the Pathways Recent Graduate Program that affords developmental experiences in the Federal Government intended to promote possible careers in the civil service to individuals who have recently graduated from qualifying educational institutions or programs.
