Pathways Intern

The Department of the Interior Internship Program (Pathways) is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed.

To be eligible for a Pathways Program internship program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on at least a half-time basis and in good standing who will be continuing education into the next semester or have received a notice of acceptance for enrollment. (You are required to submit a copy of your transcript or notice of acceptance.)
  • Enrollment must be with an accredited educational institution or state-approved home school. These may include high schools, colleges, universities, technical, trade, vocational, or business schools, and state approved home school secondary and post-secondary programs.
  • Qualifying certificate programs are post-high school programs equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.

As a Student Trainee (Admin Support) your duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Performs duties to maintain a smooth flow of work. Files correspondence, reports and other office materials according to established procedures; locates and assembles requested materials. Receives incoming correspondence, reports, and work requests, and routes material to proper staff members. Operates system to monitor and control timely completion of documents. Receives visitors and telephone callers; takes and refers messages, or refers customers to proper staff members. Performs tasks involving duplication and faxing.
  • Uses a computer to type a wide variety of materials involving different forms, formats, arrangements, preparation, and processing procedures. Develops correspondence from brief instructions as to content or by adapting previously prepared material. Compiles data for preparation and typing of assigned reports, completion of forms or other materials as may relate to work request. Uses automation software to prepare spreadsheets, charts, graphs, etc. Responsibilities include selection and application of appropriate procedures, correct abbreviations, spelling, grammar, punctuation, assembly of attachments, and other related clerical processes. Proofreads work typed personally or by others.
  • Receives visitors and telephone callers. Refers to requested person or function or determines the person appropriate to handle the contact. Provides readily known or available non-technical information, e.g., functional assignments or locations of individuals, status of suspense items, administrative procedures, etc. Takes and refers messages.
  • Supports the administration of financial assistance processes by preparing documents and compiling budget and fiscal data from financial management reports for the supervisor of the assigned office.

Special Provisions for Interns with Previous Related Education or Experience: Previous education and/or experience may be evaluated to determine the highest grade level for which the individual is qualified.

Current students in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

Applicants meet the following eligibility requirement(s) by the closing date of the announcement, and also provide documentation such as current acceptance and/or enrollment within 30 days of acceptance of tentative job offer. Current Degree Audits or Unofficial Transcripts are also acceptable.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualification.

Minimum Qualification [GS-03]
  1. Completion of 1 year of post-high school education. An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours or the equivalent in an accredited college or university. OR
  2. Completion of 6 months of general experience that demonstrates ability to perform the work of the position. General experience is (1) any type of work that demonstrated your ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with administrative support related work. OR
  3. A combination of general experience and education as described above that when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. Note: to determine your total qualifying experience, we will determine a percentage of the experience required for the GS-3 grade level; then determine the percentage of the education required for the GS-3; then add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level.
Minimum Qualification [GS-04]
  1. 6 months general experience and 6 months specialized experience. General experience is defined as (1) Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled; or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience is defined as experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to grade GS-03 in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include: Use of personal computer terminal; Use of office automation software; Assist in preparation of documents; Proofreading documents; Oral and written communication skills; Providing customer service OR
  2. Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree. OR
  3. A combination of general experience and education as described above that when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. Note: todetermine your total qualifying experience, we will determine a percentage of the experience required for the GS-4 grade level; then determine the percentage of the education required for the GS-4; then add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

PROOF OF EDUCATION: You MUST submit proof of CURRENT acceptance and/or enrollment within 30 days of acceptance of tentative job offer.

All applicants who are using education or a combination of education and experience to qualify must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, institution name, and student name. If any required coursework is not easily recognizable on transcripts, or if you believe a portion of a particular course can be credited toward meeting an educational requirement, you must also provide a memorandum on letterhead from the institution's registrar, dean, or other appropriate official stating the percentage of the course that should be considered to meet the requirement and the equivalent number of units. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable; however, if you are selected for the position, you will be required to produce the original official transcripts.

PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education.
