Duties

Help

The Digitization Services Section is responsible for providing digital reformatting support to curatorial divisions within the following Service units: Discovery and Preservation Services and Researcher and Collection Services. Digitization Services Section staff collaborate with other Library curatorial units, technical staff and external organizations to establish best practices, implement new and streamline existing digitization workflows, and identify problems and propose solutions for the workflows within the scope of the section.

Implements assigned portions of projects. Suggests routine improvements to basic workflows for multiple content streams and identifies standard risks and challenges to implementation. Establishes priorities and timeframes in coordination with management and stakeholders. Implements approved plans by scheduling and coordinating work for assigned portions of projects, including recommendations on division of work. Tracks assigned portions of projects using software and other tools and schedules activities required to move projects to completion as appropriate. Reports on status of assigned portions of the project according to the schedules and mechanisms established for the unit.

As assigned, coordinates with stakeholders to assist in designing and implementing workflows. Evaluates the results of digital collections projects. Ensures all digital activities and plans for assigned portions of projects conform to or enhance current Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative (FADGI) standards and Library custodial practices and make optimum use of resources and staff expertise. Makes recommendations for future improvements.

Maintains routine personal contacts to provide or exchange information and professional knowledge related to multiple projects.

Consults with supervisors and team leads to resolve problems or issues. Provides input to the supervisor/team leader in planning and implementing workflow procedures and setting production goals for assigned tasks or workflows. Assists others inside and outside the Library with resolving digitization questions.

Consults with stakeholders as assigned to assist in implementing digitization projects. Offers suggestions and advice on operational and technical problems for assigned portions of projects. Serves as a point of contact for questions about assigned digitization projects, and provides technical advice on assigned portions of digitization workflows, standards, practices, and equipment.

Acquires and applies knowledge of techniques and methods relating to digital content management and digital projects. Proposes routine modifications to existing information practices, precedents, and techniques and adapts previous approaches to solve information, organization, and access issues related to digitization and digital content within the assigned task or workflow.

Acquires and utilizes knowledge of the FADGI standards to provide technical evaluations of hardware setup, performance, and image tonal and color accuracy. Acquires and applies knowledge to analyze digitization equipment to ensure that all processes are performing properly.

Acquires and applies knowledge of digitization workflows and provides technical service and support with image capture, image editing, and quality reviewing of assigned portions of projects using high-end digital cameras located in controlled environments and on location. Acquires and applies principles of photography combined with digital technology, sets up lighting, and captures device target in order to collect data on camera setup, calibrating for tonal and color accuracy, and determining resolution. Selects the proper equipment while taking into consideration user requirements and collection material characteristics for proper handling. Uses specialized book cradles and other props to ensure compliance of material handling requirements provided by the Conservation Division.

Implements digitization and conversion processes, such as high-resolution digital still imaging and scanning, digital format conversion, post processing, and quality review. Utilizes various systems and methods for image file delivery to end users. Acquires and applies specialized knowledge of the operation of a wide range of digitization hardware and software, including ICC color management technique and technology, and the applications of ICC color management processes to cultural heritage imaging.

The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area.

The incumbent of this position will work a flextime, compflex, or maxiflex work schedule.

This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position.

Relocation expenses will not be authorized for the person(s) selected under this vacancy announcement.

At present, the Library of Congress will not enforce an earlier policy to require all employees be vaccinated against COVID-19. Qualifications

Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

Ability to implement digital imaging projects.**

Ability to provide consultation or liaison duties.**

Ability to research and analyze techniques and methods relating to digital content management and digital projects.

Ability to create digital images and provide technical service and support.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.

Although it is the Library's policy to afford the maximum pay benefit to employees when setting rates of pay, a new appointee who has had no previous Federal service will generally be paid the minimum step of the grade.
