Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the Head, Research and Scholars Center, Smithsonian American Art Museum. The responsibilities of the position is to manage the office and its program areas including short-and-long term planning to strengthen, expand, and extend office programs; formulation of policy; and supervision of professional constituencies.

Duties

Help

Typical work assignments include:

  • Providing general oversight for the museum’s Fellows and Academic Programs, Intern Programs, the Museum’s Journal and Publication Prizes, including the supervision of the high- level staff managing the day-to-day operations of these programs.
  • Responsible for managing the museum's art research databases, developing program policies, plans and objectives related to the program.
  • Providing direct oversight for the museum’s special collections, which include extensive photograph archives and several artist archives used by national and international scholars in the field of American art.
  • Directing and supervising the personnel and day-to-day functions of the office, including the development of the office and program budgets (federal and trust); selection of personnel; requisitioning of supplies, services and equipment; and control of expenditures.
  • Promoting the office and its resources among scholars and other professional constituencies.
  • Encouraging participation of these constituents in the programs and activities of the museum.

Qualifications

You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position, Specialized experience is defined as experience in program management, administration, and staff supervision; strategic planning skills; art history and visual culture, particularly American art; interests and needs of scholars and researchers of American art and related fields; principles and practices of information management; developing computer databases; archival standards and procedures for special collections; professional associations and resources within the visual resource, information management and archival fields; and writing and editing. 

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

  • Skill directing and supervising the personnel and day-to-day functions of an office, including development of the office and program budgets; selection of personnel; requisitioning of supplies, services, and equipment; and control of expenditures;
  • Skill in promoting the office and its resources among scholars and other professional constituencies including establishing and maintaining liaisons with other research centers, universities, and centers of higher education; while actively developing jointly sponsored programs of mutual benefit.
