The Assistant Inspector General (AIG) position is in the Office of Special Reviews, which was formed to increase the Office of Inspector General's (OIG) flexibility and capacity to quickly conduct reviews of significant events and emergent issues not squarely within the focus of a single existing OIG Directorate or Office.
The incumbent will have broad responsibility for ensuring the success of the program, exercising executive leadership, management, and direction over the Office. Additionally, the incumbent has responsibility for supervising and directing timely, complex, reviews and special projects carried out by Office staff. These reviews and special projects could include working collaboratively with other Directorates. The incumbent is responsible for planning, directing, and executing multifaceted investigative, analytical, and legal reviews. The individual also performs sensitive duties and assignments of importance to the Inspector General (IG) and functions at a maximum level of responsibility and with a high degree of independence and authority.
As the AIG for the Office of Special Reviews, you will:
- Design and management of a comprehensive program of administrative and criminal investigations, surveys, and complex analytical and legal reviews covering all activities and levels of the VA including the central Office and field stations, as well as individuals and organizations having official dealings with the VA.
- Provide expert advice and guidance consistent with applicable law and the interpretations there of by VA's General Counsel on issues relating to the conduct of OIG criminal and administrative investigations, and other initiatives designed to prevent or detect inefficiency, waste, fraud, abuse and mismanagement in VA programs and operations.
- Set investigative priorities and allocate resources to major investigative efforts.
- Plan, conduct, and supervise reviews and special projects that focus on sensitive and often highly visible matters. Initiate and develop special studies and reviews based on interests or requests from sources, such as Hotline contacts, Congress, or the media.
Current career Senior Executives, QRB-certified graduates of SES candidate development programs, and individuals with SES reinstatement eligibility are not required to address the executive core qualifications. They are required to address the technical qualifications. All other applicants are required to address both the executive core qualifications and the technical qualifications.
The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service.
Mandatory Qualifications Requirements: To meet minimum qualifications, applicants must possess the following technical and executive core competencies. These competencies would typically be gained through experience, education, and training that reflects progressive development and achievement in managing a Federal legal program for a nationwide organization.
