Duties

Help
  • Participates in inventories of wildlife and their habitats.
  • Determines likely impacts of forestry and range development or improvement projects on wildlife and their habitat.
  • Participates in habitat improvement projects such as planting shrubs, trees and grasses; prescribed burns; and weed control.
  • Participates in construction projects such as water developments, and fencing.
  • Assesses impacts of fuels management projects on wildlife habitat and populations; makes recommendations to reduce or eliminate impacts on public lands projects.
  • Compiles and organizes survey data in current files and other sources, prepares narratives, and reports on and overlays of areas inventoried.
  • Enters and retrieves data from automated databases.
  • To perform duties of this position requires the use of motor vehicles. In most cases this will be a 4-wheel drive vehicle or ATV.
  • Assesses impacts of fuels management projects on wildlife habitat and populations; makes recommendations to reduce or eliminate impacts on public lands projects.

Qualifications

GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience may include successfully identifying and monitoring wildlife and plants. Inventorying, surveying, or mapping rare and special status species habitat based on specific protocols and guidelines. Assisting in compiling data obtained through survey and assembling it into logical sequence for review. OR Successful completion of a full 4 year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to this position. OR A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.

GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 level. Examples of specialized experience may include inventory, monitoring, and assessment of a variety of wildlife species populations and habitat conditions. Creating maps and assisting in the organization of field inventories of wildlife species and habitat. Compiling occurrence and distribution data, cover maps, and other collected field data. Independently compiling data obtained through survey/study and assembling the data into a logical sequence for review. OR Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position. OR A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.

GS-07: One year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-6 level. Examples of specialized experience may include researching, compiling, and tabulating a full range of wildlife inventory data. Leading or conducting field inventories of wildlife species to develop intensive scientific information. Collecting ecological site information for sensitive, threatened, or endangered wildlife. Visualizing, analyzing, and interpreting data for reporting, presentation, and making recommendations for future management actions. OR Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position; OR A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Position requires physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.

Work Environment: Work is performed outdoors in rugged terrain; to include steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces in extremely hot or inclement weather.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

The official worksite for the selectee is the duty station identified in this vacancy announcement. The selectee will typically report to this duty location on a regular and recurring weekly basis. The selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.

Once employees are permitted to return to the office, you will be expected to report to the duty station listed on this announcement in accordance with the Department's reentry procedures provided by your Servicing Human Resources Office.
