As a Statistician (Health) (DIRECT HIRE), you will:
Identify specific statistical research areas that merit investigation, develop new hypotheses and approaches for studies, and evaluate the feasibility of such endeavors.
Conduct research and statistical studies or projects related to statistical computation in the preparation of public health programs.
Develop guidelines and provide interpretations of statistical policies that conform to HHS requirements.
Collaborate with other scientists on aspects of study design, analysis, and interpretation.
Provide technical advice to peers and senior managers within and outside of organization on statistical methods and techniques.
May serve as a project leader, assuming responsibility for the development of project planning, coordination of overall team efforts, and maintaining appropriate lines of communication.
Evaluate new statistical procedures and software and adapts them if necessary.
Develop and implement methods and procedures for the collection, processing, compilation, editing and analysis of statistical data.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
A. Applicants must have successfully completed a full four-year course of study at an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that includes 15 semester hours in statistics (or in math and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical/biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc.

B. Have a combination of education and experience -- courses as described in "A" above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. In addition to meeting the basic qualifications requirement, applicants must meet the specialized experience as stated below.
GS-12: ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

GS-13 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience evaluating data quality and data completeness in order to produce new assessments of the health of the citizens in the United States.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
