ALL US CITIZENS. DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (COVID-19 - VA 002) in-accordance with 5 U.S.C. 3304(a)(3) and 5 CFR 337.205(b)(1)-(4).
The incumbent has the following major areas of responsibility:
Receives all specimens delivered to the laboratory for processing. Accessions all specimens into the computer system, using both automated and manual methods/downtime. Transports specimens from the collection site to the respective department for testing. Answers questions relative to patient specimens and tests requested. Instructs and assists patients, physicians, and providers on specimen requirements. Ensures adequate usage of equipment and maintenance of all required records. The incumbent will also trouble shoot all specimen type according to specimen requirements. Prepare all send out and special send out/biohazard material. Verify all reference report through both automated and manual method. Aliquot and store sample according to specimen integrity. Load sample onto instrument. Multitask/prioritize and work independently.
MAJOR DUTIES - 50%
Provides assistance of a technical, specialized, or support nature to health and medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions. The incumbent insures positive specimen identification and maintains compliance for processing all specimens received in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (PALM). The incumbent verifies patient information and accepts ordered tests in the computer system, generating bar-coded labels, organizing workflow, and insuring patient orders are processed appropriately. The incumbent is expected to be able to perform the following tasks: Perform work in clinical laboratory where the majority of the work is in support of patient diagnosis and /or treatment. Performs work, and applies practical knowledge where needed, involving routine and stat tests for processing. Using the techniques of medical laboratory practices in the Client Services and special send out/biohazard material sections. Implements and follow proper protocols in receiving/collection, sorting, recording, storing and /or shipping clinical laboratory specimens so that appropriate testing /diagnosis procedure can be performed. In addition, additional data or information form healthcare provider may have to be obtained as required. The incumbent will receive collected and delivered blood samples, body fluids and other biological specimens according to documented James J Peters VAMC Pathology and Laboratory and CAP guideline and protocols.
CLIENT SERVICES 30%
Provides clerical and administrative support to the service. Maintains records and statistical data for reference purposes when necessary. Provides action to all laboratory consults on orders requested by the ordering providers. Rectifies and administratively approves all consults (Lab add-ons, test not found in CPRS request, etc.) when completed. Organizes and labels samples with barcoding information. Process specimens as described in PALM manual including automated LEDI and Vista potions by ward order entry and multi-purpose accessioning.
MAINTAIN PROFESSIONAL PROFICIENCY: 5%
Maintains professional currency through formal and informal education and professional training through TMS (Talent Management System), MTS (Med training) and Medial Lab.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 8am-4:30pm, rotating weekends

Physical Requirements:
The work is primarily sedentary but also requires some standing, walking, bending, lifting and carrying of light items. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work may require heavy lifting of equipment or patients. The work requires the handling of moderately heavy contaminated waste up to 40 lbs. The incumbent will utilize all safety practices and equipment required by accrediting and regulatory agencies for purposes of ensuring compliance with occupational safety observance.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
