Duties

Help
  • Operates a twin engine hydrographic survey launch with a 4 person passenger capacity.
  • Operates the launch in waterways with danger areas, limited sight distance, shallow harbors and narrow channels in all seasons and weather conditions except during freeze-up and major storms.
  • Responsible for transporting the survey launch by trailer from one port to another using a government truck.
  • Drives and back the truck with boat/trailer in traffic, over highways and uneven roads and grounds, and in narrow or crowded areas.
  • Performs hydrographic surveys, work is performed in areas ranging from open waters (several nautical miles outside harbor breakwaters) to very confined areas in smaller rivers (100 feet from bank to bank).

  • This position requires a state driver license.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical.
  • This position is a drug abuse testing position. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, condition of employment for certain positions identified as critical under the drug abuse testing program, or a memorandum of understanding (MOU).
  • This position requires you to obtain a small craft operator license Corp of Engineer survey boat operator's license within 6 months of reporting to duty.
  • This position requires you to possess and maintain a valid US Coast Guard Master, 100 ton license with radar enforcement.
  • This position requires you to work in stretched and cramped positions.
  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within 6 months of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Small Craft Operator (Surveing) without more than normal supervision. Operate vessel in normal weather condition and transport survey party members and equipment from one port to another using a government truck. Be able to drive and back truck with boat/trailer in traffic, over highways and uneven roads and grounds, and in narrow or crowded areas. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Efforts: Light physical effort is expended when steering vessels, loading and unloading supplies and materials, and making repairs and adjustments to the engine and hull.
  • Working Conditions: Environmental Conditions: Operators work in an enclosed cabin when steering vessel. They work on deck and in cramped quarters, when making repairs to deck and engine. The position duties includes three (3) disagreeable conditions for frequent or continuous exposure to weather conditions, working in mud and water and inadequate ventilation.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the Screen Out Element to be qualified. No substitution of education for experience is permitted.

  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
