The scientists will join a team focused on interagency collaboration to improve knowledge and use of remote sensing data, providing the informatics, data systems and domain science expertise needed to assess elements of NASA data systems, and for rapid prototyping and testing of advanced ideas in data and information systems.
Summary
NASA is seeking data scientists to design and develop cutting-edge techniques to improve discovery, access, and visualization of large volumes of Earth science data. The scientists will join a team focused on interagency collaboration to improve knowledge and use of remote sensing data, providing the informatics, data systems and domain science expertise needed to assess elements of NASA data systems, and for rapid prototyping and testing of advanced ideas in data and information systems.
Direct/Conduct intensive research investigations and/or application studies directed towards discovering, disseminating, and applying new and expanded knowledge in data science and informatics that are consistent with Agency guidance and direction.
Participate in scientific investigations with other scientists in the development and use of tools for the analysis of data from satellites, airborne, and/or ground-based observing platforms.
Execute individual and/or group projects as task, team, or activity lead from project initiation, through concept development, test, and implementation. Work in collaboration with other teams from across NASA, academia, or industry.
Set research goals, design and implementation of tool development, budgeting, project scheduling, synthesis of results, and documentation of processes and outcomes.
Serve as a subject matter expert relevant to the Earth science mission, research and data analysis, and archiving, working effectively as a member of a diverse research team.
Formulate and lead the development of proposals for new research activities, help execute funded projects, and document accomplishments in the peer-reviewed literature.
Communicate scientific results through presentations and the scientific peer review and publication process to document, validate the quality of scientific research, and obtain recognition as a technical expert by the scientific community.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level:
Serving as a contributing member of a data science team;
Conducting research and development of new scientific and analysis techniques to solve challenging earth science problems, supporting submission of peer- reviewed proposals in response to technical solicitations;
Preparing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications, documenting research results, publication of technical reports, articles, and related research documents;
Collaborating with multi-disciplined professionals, stakeholders, and partners on project teams and across organizational boundaries.

Education
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in a) engineering from a college or university that has at least one ABET accredited engineering program or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.
*Note: A computer science curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.
Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
