ASSESSES THE DEGREE & NATURE OF HEARING LOSS:

  • Responsible for identifying & evaluating individuals with auditory disorders that impact the reception & perception of speech, language & other acoustic signals.
  • Administers the full range of behavioral & physiologic tests such as those that assess vestibular nerve function (ENG), auditory brainstem function, otoacoustic emissions, acoustic immittance, acoustic reflex & acoustic reflex decay, as well as a variety of special audiological procedures.
  • Uses the full range of behavioral & physiologic audiologic diagnostic tests to assist in the differential diagnosis of auditory disorders of such diverse disease entities as otosclerosis, otitis media, cholesteatoma, tumors of the tympanum, Menieres Syndrome, cerebellopontine angle tumors or other conductive, cochlea, & retrocochlear lesions of the auditory system.
  • Evaluates the functional status of the ear canal for testing purposes & provides cerumen management.
  • Responsible for the evaluation of type & degree of hearing loss for patients who are unable to provide consistent & reliable responses to conventional audiometric procedures.
  • Responsible for conducting assessment of social efficiency examinations, the results of which will be utilized in the assessment of hearing impairment for adjudication & medico-legal purposes.
  • Counsel the veteran, & in some cases his/her family or other persons responsible for his/her care, about the nature, degree & ramifications of his/her hearing impairment.

RECOMMENDS REMEDIAL MEASURES TO MITIGATE HEARING LOSS:
  • Responsible for direct services of a remedial & sometimes preventative nature. The services provided encompass the accurate selection of monaural or binaural conventional & digital hearing aids including completely-in-the canal through behind-the-ear hearing aids, CROS, Bi-CROS, Multi-CROS hearing aids, conventional & implantable bone conduction hearing aids, middle ear implants, cochlear implants & other implantable hearing aids, & FM integrated hearing aids .
  • Responsible for the instruction & counseling in the use, fitting, adjustment & modification of all personal amplification systems.
  • Responsible for the instruction & counseling in use of, & recommendations for procurement of special instruments such as desk amplifiers, telephone amplifiers, Bluetooth compatible devices, FM systems, infra-red devices, induction devices for use with phones, radios, televisions or other electronic devices necessary for communication.
  • Responsible for the routine inspection & repair, when indicated, of all personal amplification systems or assistive listening devices where indicated.
  • Responsible for taking an impression of the outer portion of the ear for an ear mold, determination of need for special ear molds (such as vented, soft plastic, skeleton, acrylic, etc.) made necessary in cases of allergic reaction, severe hearing loss, or other reasons
  • Responsible for the issuance of ear defenders for prevention of acoustic trauma for those individuals working in a noisy environment.
  • Recommends aural rehabilitation programs for patients with significant physical & psychological complicating conditions, develops treatment plans for difficult & complex cases in which communicative function has been impaired due to an auditory disorder, & designs training plans to assist patient & caregivers to in utilizing available hearing resources.
  • Makes a recommendation for change of job in those cases where hearing loss is progressing due to high noise level exposure.
  • Responsible for providing a comprehensive program of aural rehabilitation to those hearing impaired patients when this type of clinical management is indicated.
  • Responsible for assisting the supervisor of clinical audiology in the instruction & supervision of student trainees in audiology.
  • Participate in research activities pertinent to clinical audiology. .
  • May be requested to assist in gathering clinical research data.
  • Responsible for the proper maintenance & calibration of the specialized electro-acoustic instrumentation utilized in the assessment of the auditory system.
  • Have a considerable knowledge of the technical aspects of both the clinical instruments as well as the calibration instruments.
  • The incumbent is responsible for 1) protecting the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion & 2) following applicable regulations & instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc., as set out in the access agreement which the incumbent signs.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. Master's degree or its equivalent in audiology or hearing science from an accredited college or university is required. ["Accredited" means a college or university accredited by a regional accreditation organization and an audiology program recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE) and/or the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).]
  • Licensure. For those grades that require licensure (GS-12 and above), the incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.

The audiologist must maintain full, current, and unrestricted licensure/registration
OR
Non-licensed audiologists who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate audiologist under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405(c). Failure to obtain licensure during appointment as a graduate audiologist is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. Individuals appointed as graduate audiologists may not be promoted to the GS12 level without being fully licensed. This may result in termination of employment.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:

GS-9
Education and Experience. None beyond the basic requirements.

GS-11
Education and Experience. Completion of 1 year of professional experience as an audiologist equivalent to the next lower (GS-09) level;
or
3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a doctoral degree;
or
doctoral degree in audiology, hearing science, or a directly related field.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs):
a. Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice;
b. Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
c. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, acoustics, applied acoustics, communication, psychoacoustics, and auditory/vestibular pathophysiology;
d. Knowledge of principles and techniques in the assessment and treatment of auditory and balance disorders;
e. Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice.
f. Ability to interact with patients, families, and other health care professionals.

GS-12

Licensure.
The incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia

Education and Experience. In addition to the requirements at the GS-11 level, completion of 1 year of professional experience comparable to the next lower level (GS-11)l and possession of a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology.

Staff audiologists at this grade level must demonstrate professional knowledge of, and skill in applying, a wide range of theories, principles, and methodologies of the practice of audiology to a wide range of populations. Individuals may perform ancillary assignments, including program management duties on an occasional basis, where the complexity and amount of work is not substantial [(less that 25% of the time).

The following KSAs are required:
a. Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies;
b. Knowledge of clinical services, and the ability to perform them independently;
c. Ability to conduct assessments and provide treatment interventions;
d. Ability to provide consultation to other health care professionals;
e. Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice; and [f.] Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-09 to GS-12.
