Summary

This position is located at the Oklahoma City VA Health Care System (OCVAHCS) in the Clinical Nutrition Section of Nutrition and Food Services. The Clinical Dietetic Technician has the responsibility of providing a high-level of technical assistance and support to the Clinical Registered Dietitian Nutritionist in providing all steps of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Nutrition Care process and for participating as an Interdisciplinary Care Team member.

Duties

Help

Major duties include but are not limited to:

  • Works collaboratively with the Clinical Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) to complete the following clinical functions in the performance of their professional duties.
  • Obtain, verify, and interpret data needed to identify nutrition related problems, their causes, and significance.
  • Use the data obtained from the nutrition assessment to identify the chief nutrition problem, its etiology, and the signs and symptoms to support the diagnosis.
  • Develop and implement the clinical nutrition care plan to address and manage the Nutrition Diagnosis.
  • Communicate, monitor, and document (in the medical record) the response to nutrition therapy in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Provides nutrition care to inpatients and outpatients, which may include completing nutrition screens as well as working with the Registered Dietitian (RD) to develop and carry out nutrition interventions and plans.
  • Compares patients' nutrition data to pre-established screening criteria and works with RD to determine appropriate level of nutritional care.
  • Care plans reflect knowledge of various disease entities, the effects of the aging process (specifically young adult, middle adult, geriatric stages), treatment modalities, and drug/nutrient interactions.
  • Initiates nutrition counseling for selected patients on modified diets, including an overview of dietary restrictions.
  • Writes learning objectives, lesson outlines, and evaluation procedures for assigned group classes to provide written, structured guidelines for in-class presentation.
  • Manages the use of dietary supplements for patients, including oral liquid nutrition supplements.
  • May act as clinical preceptor to dietetic students within affiliated programs.
  • Performs various clerical duties in a medical office setting in support of inpatient or outpatient nutrition services.
  • Assists veterans with logistics of virtual modalities such as VA Video Connect (VVC).
  • Assists with marketing clinical nutrition services and programs to veteran and/or staff within the medical center.
  • May be rotated through assignments and may provide relief for other clinical dietetic technicians to provide adequate coverage for periods of planned and/or emergency leave situations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: The work requires walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items, such as meal trays, instruction material, books and manuals. Some of the work is sedentary, such as computer activities. Computer entry of electronic progress notes, entailing multiple episodes of keyboard strokes is a daily responsibility. It may be necessary to push electronic equipment and arrange classroom areas in preparation of classes.

Work is performed in a hospital, requiring normal safety precautions typical of a Medical Center with critically ill veterans, psychiatric, Rehabilitation and Extended Care Center, Domiciliary and/or Ambulatory Care Units, and involves some exposure to contagious disease. The employee must observe normal safety precautions while working in an office setting with electrical and stationary equipment and use correct lifting techniques. Discomfort may exist due to ventilating system and/or humidity changes in various offices. Universal blood/body fluid precautions may necessitate protective equipment be worn in situations of potential exposure.


Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Qualifications

Time-in-Grade Requirement- Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. (If you have not held a GS grade at any time in the past 52 weeks, this question does not apply to you.) For this vacancy, applicants must have held grade GS-03 or higher for at least one year to be eligible for the GS-04 grade level of this position; GS-04 or higher for at least one year to be eligible for the GS-05 grade level of this position; GS-05 or higher for at least one year to be eligible for the GS-06 grade level of this position. The grade must have been held in the Federal service but may have been in any occupation. Provide a copy of your last or most recent SF-50, "Notification of Personnel Action" to indicate your current federal status. You must also submit additional SF-50(s) to clearly demonstrate one year time-in-grade as required in the announcement. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate that you possess one year time-in-grade. In this instance, you should provide an additional SF-50 to clearly demonstrate one year time-in-grade.

To qualify for this position at the GS-4 grade level, you must meet one of the following:
Experience: At least six (6) months of specialize experience and six (6) months of general experience that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of this Health Technician (Dietetic) position. Specialized experience includes documenting dietary/nutrition information and updating patient records; knowledge of tray assembly area procedures; using dietetics software programs; following verbal and written instructions; and using computer equipment, phone system, and printers. This position requires effective communication skills both verbally and in writing and good customer service. General Experience is any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position or which provides a familiarity with the nutrition environment.
OR
Education: Successful completion of two (2) years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects directly related to this position A bachelor's degree or four (4) years of education above the high school level with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position (i.e. nutrition, dietary therapy, food and nutrition science, food service systems management, etc.). This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.
OR
Combination: An equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the first year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total qualification requirements for this grade level. This education must have been obtained at an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

To qualify for this position at the GS-5 grade level, you must meet one of the following:
Specialized Experience: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of this Health Technician (Dietetic) position. Specialized experience includes performing duties in food service in a hospital environment; knowledge of tray assembly area procedures; using dietetics software programs; familiarity with regular and modified diets; assisting with food selections; following verbal and written instructions; and using computer equipment, phone system, and printers. This position requires effective communication skills both verbally and in writing and good customer service. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must clearly indicate the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
OR
Education: A bachelor's degree or four (4) years of education above the high school level with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position (i.e. nutrition, dietary therapy, food and nutrition science, food service systems management, etc.). This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.
OR
Combination: An equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total qualification requirements for this grade level. This education must have been obtained at an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

To qualify for this position at the GS-6 grade level, you must meet one of the following:
Specialized Experience:
You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of the Health Technician-Dietetic position. Specialized experience includes assisting with developing nutritional care plans for patients, providing training for all Nutrition and Food Services on computer systems and security issues, knowledge of modified therapies and medical nutrition therapy for health and a wide variety of disease states, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, skilled in educational techniques and leadership skills in order to conducted training and provide guidance to employees.
OR
Education: Successfully completed at least one-half year of graduate level education (9 semester hours above a Bachelor's degree) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Health Technician-Dietetic position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
OR
Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as listed above, may be used to meet total experience requirements. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the Health Technician-Dietetic position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
