Help

This position serves as a Systems Analyst supporting nonstandard workstation computer systems and procuring, implementing, supporting and maintaining local networks for deploying training and performance support Coast Guard wide.

Being a CG civilian makes you a valuable member of the CG team. Typical work assignments include:

  • Functioning as a systems analyst for project teams designing, developing, evaluating and deploying performance support and nonresident technology products.
  • Performing feasibility studies dealing with training and performance support system programming needs.
  • Examining and evaluating alternative means of satisfying user requirements.
  • Reviewing proposals written for software changes and procurements, which consist of objectives, scope and user expectations.
  • Analyzing data and preparing a project synopsis that compares alternatives in terms of cost, time, necessary equipment and staff, and recommending a course of action.
  • Performing in-depth analysis of existing automated and manual software systems.
  • Developing and executing procedures to periodically monitor the logical/physical integrity of data and physical space utilization.
  • Providing consultation and training to functional area users on database and file accessing techniques, search strategies, processing and space utilization efficiencies, database network and Internet security procedures, backup and program recovery techniques, and testing techniques.

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS- 12 level, applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

Specialized experience includes:

  • Knowledge of systems analysis and design techniques, alternative design approaches relevant to the application area.
  • Skill at modifying existing systems and skill at relating major considerations or aspects of the work to the overall project.
  • Knowledge of work processes, work rules, file design, computer procedures and administrative procedures of the programs assigned.
  • Skill in adapting proven approaches in the formulation of programming specifications for new systems and major changes to existing systems.
  • Knowledge of prevailing practices in public and private sector automation to advise on alternative approaches in application system development or problem solving.
  • Knowledge of current computer industry standards and participates in the development of policy on computer benchmark standards and the implementation of adopted standards as they apply to division's computer acquisition activities.

Basic Requirements:

4. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

  4. Skill in verbal and written communication techniques.
