Summary

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) is committed to advancing knowledge and understanding of the Native cultures of the Western Hemisphere, past, present, and future, through partnership with Native people and others. This position is in the Education Department in New York under the direct supervision of the Education Manager. The Education Specialist (Workshop Coordinator), is responsible for the development and implementation of the Museum’s service to teachers.

Duties

Help

  • Sets clear goals and objectives and develops an overall evaluation plan for on-going assessment of teacher needs. Creates and maintains a short and long-term calendar of teacher programs. Develops and administers evaluation instruments. Summarizes data and creates reports to guide future program planning. Directs the work of outside evaluators when funding permits.  Ensures programs and publications engage the users and accomplish learning goals.  Conducts on-going research to ensure all programs and publications support the National Standards for Learning.
  • Performs subject-area research and works with curatorial staff to ensure content accuracy; develops educational activities based on the knowledge of the content and best museum teaching practices; and conducts formative evaluation to ensure that new activities are engaging and accomplish the learning objectives.
  • Establishes and maintains strategic partnerships with NYC-area community, education and cultural organizations and local and national Native communities to enrich the program offerings and attract new audiences. Conveys Native American cultural and historical information in writing to a variety of audiences, gained through work experience.  These audiences include Native Americans, state, and local school offices, other museums, k -12 students, K-12 teachers, and the general public. This includes experience communicating in writing for web-based educational platforms. 
  • Research contacts include Tribal experts and other Native educators, local school curriculum specialists, Native artists, local and national teacher organizations and teachers/educators who may have unique needs and interests that they wish to have the workshops address. Orally conveys Native American cultural and historical information to a variety of audiences, including Native American communities and educational institutions, state and local school offices, and other museums, K-12 grade range students, K-12 teachers, and the general public.

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as experience planning portions of, and participating in presenting teacher workshops on Native American culture and history


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

  1. Knowledge of planning, developing, coordinating, and delivering workshops for teachers gained through professional experience.
  2. Knowledge of education theory, formal and informal educational techniques, teaching practices and evaluation methods related to learning that takes place in museums gained through educational experience.
  3. Communicate effectively in writing by conveying Native American cultural and historical information to a variety of audiences, gained through experience.
  4. Communicate effectively orally by conveying Native American cultural and historical information to a variety of audiences, gained through experience.
