The Deputy Division Director serves as a member of the BCS Division leadership team and as a principal spokesperson in the area of behavioral and cognitive sciences. In consultation with the Division Director, the incumbent provides leadership and direction to the NSF Division responsible for funding research and related activities aimed at better understanding, both nationally and internationally, scientific knowledge about humans spanning areas of inquiry including brain and behavior, language and culture, origins and evolution, and geography and the environment. The Division supports research and other activities related to psychological sciences (including social, perception, cognition, cognitive neuroscience, development, learning), linguistics and science of human language, including the documentation of endangered languages, anthropological sciences (including biological, cultural and archaeological), and geographic and human-environmental sciences (including geographic distributions and interactions of human, physical, and biotic systems).
In collaboration with the Division Director, the Deputy will assess needs and trends involving the behavioral and cognitive sciences, implement overall strategic planning and policy setting for the Division, provide leadership and guidance to Division staff members, determine funding requirements, prepare and justify budget estimates, balance program needs, allocate resources, oversee the evaluation of proposals and recommendations for awards and declinations, and represent NSF to relevant external groups. Along with the Division Director, the Deputy Division Director will have supervisory and training responsibilities for science staff. The Deputy Division Director fosters partnerships with other Divisions, Directorates, Federal agencies, scientific organizations, and the academic community.
It is NSF policy that NSF personnel employed at or IPAs detailed to NSF are not permitted to participate in foreign government talent recruitment programs. 1. Education strongly preferred at the Ph.D. or equivalent professional experience or combination of education and equivalent experience in the behavioral and cognitive sciences (e.g., anthropology, psychology, geography, linguistics, neuroscience or related field).
2. Substantial research contributions and strong evidence of scholarship in the behavioral and cognitive sciences or a closely related field as evidenced in publications, awards and/or innovative leadership in research administration.
3. Demonstrated broad knowledge of diverse fields of science and their interdisciplinary impact on the behavioral and cognitive sciences.
4. Broad understanding of universities and other institutions where research and education in science and engineering is conducted. Knowledge of grant and contract administration, fiscal management, and budget preparation with experience in scientific research support.
