Duties

Help

The purpose of this position is to conduct laboratory and theoretical studies in rock mechanics aimed at developing a further understanding of failure processes under a broad range of conditions that may be expected at seismogenic depths, and to interpret how these failure processes relate to earthquake nucleation, pore fluid/rock interaction, slip velocity, attenuation, permeability, resistivity and other geophysical parameters.

As a Research Geophysicist within the Earthquake Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Plan, conduct, and analyze experiments in a variety of rock mechanics areas. Study areas include: stable creep and stick-slip behavior on simulated faults under widely varying conditions of pressure, temperature, and fluid saturation; changes in seismic velocity and attenuation; time-dependent compaction, dilatancy, strength recovery, permeability and electrical conductivity in rock; analysis of acoustic emission generated during fault nucleation and growth as an analog to seismicity patterns in the earth; and laboratory studies of fluid injection related to induced seismicity and enhanced geothermal stimulation.
  • Develop and applY research techniques to the problems of fracture nucleation and propagation, fault healing, mechanical and chemical fluid/rock interactions and physical models for earthquake premonitory effects. This includes developing computer-based numerical models to augment laboratory measurements.
  • Compile data and publish results as first author and/or as co-authors in refereed scientific journals.
  • Give lectures at national and international conferences, serve on technical review panels, and provide technical evaluations of scientific issues related to rock mechanics and earthquake mechanisms.
  • Operate a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.

In addition to what is listed above, at the GS-14 level, the researcher is expected to:

  • Develop new research directions.
  • Lead an effective and productive research team.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Work is sometimes physically demanding and involves prolonged standing in a laboratory. The laboratory work involves occasional exposure to irritant chemicals. Special safety precautions are required and protective clothing and gear such as safety glasses are routinely needed.

Travel is required for this position to attend meetings and workshops, as well as to work with colleagues from laboratories and Earth Science Departments around the world. Currently COVID travel restrictions are being followed. Post-COVID, the employee is expected to travel for a minimum of 3 trips per year. Any additional trips would be made on an as-needed-basis.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).

**OR

B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. (CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS ON HOW TO COMBINE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE)

For GS-13:

In addition to the Basic Requirements listed above, applicants must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Namely, working in a Rock Deformation or equivalent laboratory involving problems related to faulting and earthquakes.

The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position include measurement and analysis one or more of the following research disciplines: stable creep and stick-slip behavior on simulated faults; seismic velocity and attenuation; time-dependent compaction, dilatancy, strength recovery; transport properties such as permeability and electrical conductivity in rock; acoustic emission generated during fault nucleation and growth as an analog to seismicity patterns in the earth; fluid injection related to induced seismicity and enhanced geothermal stimulation. These studies were applied to problems in earthquake forecasting, the earthquake nucleation process, the earthquake cycle, crustal processes (including fluid circulation), borehole fluid injection, borehole stability, and the disposal of nuclear waste.

The complexity of this work typically required modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, Geophysicists have extensive knowledge of the principles of geology, physics and/or chemistry, a highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty.

For GS-14:

In addition to the Basic Requirements listed above, applicants must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Namely, working in a Rock Deformation or equivalent laboratory involving problems related to faulting and earthquakes.

The specialized experience requirements for the GS-14 level of this position include measurement and analysis one or more of the following research disciplines: stable creep and stick-slip behavior on simulated faults; seismic velocity and attenuation; time-dependent compaction, dilatancy, strength recovery; transport properties such as permeability and electrical conductivity in rock; acoustic emission generated during fault nucleation and growth as an analog to seismicity patterns in the earth; fluid injection related to induced seismicity and enhanced geothermal stimulation.
