Summary

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Western Regional Plant Introduction Station, Plant Germplasm Introduction and Testing Research Unit in Pullman, Washington.

In this position, you will serve as the curator of Phaseolus species providing technical direction and guidance in producing high quality, well characterized germplasm.

Duties

Help
  • Conduct and report innovative research on plant biology, seed regeneration characteristics, nutritional quality, and/or seed quality and longevity in storage of Phaseolus species.
  • Conduct and report research on genetic diversity, systematics, taxonomy, genetics and genomics.
  • Apply procedures used to accomplish the increase, evaluation, maintenance, and distribution of horticultural germplasm.
  • Apply scientific findings, developments, and advances in WRPIS species germplasm conservation to solve critical and complex problems such as preserving adequate genetic diversity in the collection.
  • Preserve and propagate genetically-pure, vigorous, disease-free seed of Phaseolus species active collections.
  • Collect or acquire genetic resources of Phaseolus species in response to needs expressed by users.
  • Organize reports of research to the general public and to regional, national, and international scientific audiences.
  • Publish research papers in scientific journals.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements for Horticulture Series, 0437
Degree: horticulture; or a related discipline of basic plant science that included at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, of which at least 16 semester hours were in horticultural subjects such as those dealing with the breeding, care, management, production, and post harvest handling of horticultural crops.
OR
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in horticulture or a related discipline of basic plant science that included course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Requirement for Genetics Series, 0440
Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.

Basic Requirements for Agronomy Series, 0471
Degree: agronomy; or related discipline of science that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in the basic plant sciences, including at least 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, such as those dealing with plant breeding, crop production, and soil and crop management.
OR
Combination of education and experience: at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, including a minimum of 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience
: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting germplasm research related to crop plant species conservation; and generating targeted characterization of plant seeds to improve biotic or abiotic stress tolerance of plants, nutritional quality of plants, seed quality, or longevity in storage.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting and planning germplasm research related to crop plant species conservation; generating targeted characterization of plants and their seeds including genetic or genomic characterization to improve biotic or abiotic stress tolerance of plants, nutritional quality of plants, seed quality, or longevity in storage; and presenting oral reports of plant and seed related research to stakeholders.

GS-14
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-14 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-13 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting, planning, designing, and leading germplasm research related to crop plant species conservation; generating targeted characterization of plants and their seeds including implementing new tools available in genomics, metabolomics, phenomics or transcriptomics to improve biotic or abiotic stress tolerance of plants, nutritional quality of plants, seed quality, or longevity in storage; developing and presenting oral reports of plant and seed related research to stakeholders; and planning, organizing, and carrying out team research including multiple collaborators and multi-disciplinary aspects.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands
The work involves laboratory, greenhouse, and/or field work which may require prolonged periods of sitting, standing and stooping when preparing seeds samples; walking over rough surface when taking plant samples in open field and lifting (up to 50 pounds), operating farm equipment, driving a pickup, and operating sprayers and other equipment as required. The position will require occasional travel.

Working Environment
Work is performed in well-lighted offices, greenhouses, laboratory, and in the field under good weather conditions. Some experimental protocols are required to use potentially dangerous solvents, high voltage equipment and UV light. The incumbent must follow closely the established lab safety precautions necessary to avoid accidents or discomforts. Part of the work is performed in an office setting involving everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions deemed necessary. Work requires special safety precautions and protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, goggles, gloves, etc.
