Help

As an Electronics Technician, you will perform the following duties:

  • Plan and perform improvements to electronic equipment. Devise and develop improvements and alterations to complex technical equipment, instruments or software, modify and conduct complex tests, and analyzes results.
  • Perform development work and conduct research. Establish experimental and empirical methods and techniques, interpret results and select or recommend approaches to design problem solutions.
  • Plan, organize and execute a limited project which requires the solution of both design and operational problems. Coordinate with engineering and customers to perform improvements to electronic equipment via technical data and diagrams.

These duties are described at the full performance level of the GS-11; the GS-09 and GS-10 are developmental leading to such performance.

This position requires a Moderate Risk Security Clearance.

This position will be filled under the DOC Alternative Personnel System (CAPS). This system replaced the Federal GS pay plan and structure. Under CAPS, positions are classified by career, pay plan, and pay band.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, recurring bending, crouching, stooping or the lifting of moderately heavy objects.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work involves regular and recurring moderate risks that may require the use of special safety precautions or devices. The incumbent works around machines, moving parts and other potentially hazardous items.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • This position requires that the incumbent engage in mission flights, which may include flights into severe storms, and perform the duties of this position and NOAA Air Crewmember duties during these flights. As a crewmember is subject to drug testing.
  • Physical demands involve the lifting and handling of equipment in excess of 50 pounds in a cramped environment and a considerable amount of walking, stooping, crawling and climbing.
  • The incumbent is required to meet and maintain the AOC Air Crewmember medical requirements and the aeromedical requirements of any assigned duties.
  • The position requires extensive knowledge of accepted aircraft wiring procedures, AOC installation procedures and avionics maintenance procedures.
  • The position requires strict adherence to safety procedures due to the potentially hazardous environment into which flights are made, and systems involving explosive and incendiary devices.
  • Travel for extended periods of time is a requirement of the position. Travel status of up to 90 days per year and for periods of four to six weeks at a time is not uncommon.

EDUCATION:   There is no positive education requirement for this position.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service.  Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.  This experience need not have been in the federal government.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify at the GS-09 level:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:

  • Reading, interpreting, and working from electronic blueprints, drawings, schematics, and specifications; and
  • Testing and troubleshooting electronic systems, conducting fault isolation and repair of faulty components.

To qualify at the GS-10 level:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:

  • Using electronic diagrams and testing procedures to troubleshoot electronic components to identify root cause of failures to perform repair and maintenance;
  • Participating in development and review of electronics system design for installation and maintenance activities; and
  • Assisting in coordinating test laboratory activities for maintenance and repairs and calibration of equipment.

To qualify at the GS-11 level:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:

  • Providing support in engineering activities such as design, modification, and testing of electronics systems;
  • Identifying and correcting electronic deficiencies and recommending improved procedures; and
  • Assisting in evaluating faults in the design and operational configuration of electronic systems and equipment.

Education

Substitution of education for specialized experience is not applicable to this vacancy.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
