Duties

Help

You will elect at the time of your application to participate in either a law enforcement or non-law enforcement internship.

Law Enforcement Internship: Designed for students who are interested in a career in law enforcement, you will be assigned a mentor from one of the FLETC training divisions. Half of your time will be spent auditing basic or advanced training programs. The remaining half of your time will be spent working on meaningful training-related research and writing projects under the guidance of your mentor.

Non-Law Enforcement Internship: Designed for students who have a desire to work in the public sector. Under the guidance of a mentor, you will receive on-the-job experience in a professional work environment focused on the FLETC's business fields. In addition, you will receive opportunities to audit the FLETC's numerous basic or advanced training programs.

Participate as a student volunteer in a virtual environment, utilizing your own internet connection and personal electronic devices and email.

Qualifications

You must meet the requirements listed below.

Specific Requirements: Undergraduate Students

  1. Earned at least 90 semester hours (135 quarter hours) by the time of application.
  2. Possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4-point scale.

  1. Possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4-point scale.

General Requirements:

  1. U.S. Citizenship;
  2. Remain enrolled with your academic institution during the course of the internship period; and
  3. Have a declared major in at least one of the following: criminal justice, criminology, business, information technology, or social science-related fields of study.

Additional information

If you receive a tentative offer for this program, you will be required to complete an Optional Form 306, Declaration for Federal Employment, and to sign and certify the accuracy of all information in your application, prior to entry on duty. False statements on any part of the application may result in withdrawal of an offer to participate, dismissal after beginning your internship, fine, or imprisonment.

To ensure the accomplishment of our mission, DHS requires every student volunteer to be reliable and trustworthy. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully pass a background investigation for suitability as a condition of placement into the program. This will include a credit check after a tentative offer is given, a review of financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs.

Applicants from Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs)Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) are highly encouraged to apply.

You must maintain student eligibility and enrollment for the duration of the internship.

This internship does not offer conversion to permanent employment.

You will be required to complete the FLETC Student Volunteer Service Agreement and DHS Form 1000-6 Non-Disclosure Agreement if you are selected.

FLETC reserves the right to discontinue the College Intern Program (CIP) at any time for any reason.

Student volunteers are not considered Federal employees for any purposes other than compensation for on-the-job injuries and tort claims. Additionally, student volunteers are not entitled to remuneration or benefits, nor is their volunteer service creditable for leave or any other employee benefit.

You will be assessed on the totality your application. For example:

  • The content of your resume. Does your resume demonstrate any experience in leadership? Are you involved in any community outreach or volunteer activities? If so, to what extent? Does your resume show any paid or unpaid work experience?
  • The quality of the narrative essay. Is the essay clear in articulating your career goals and interests? How many grammatical errors are present? Does the essay demonstrate sufficient forethought and intent?
  • The depth of the nomination letter from an academic official. Does the letter show a high level of personal knowledge of the student? Is the student doing well academically? If not, are there mitigating circumstances such as personal hardship? Would the student be an asset to the FLETC in accomplishing its mission? If so, how? How well your major and overall course of study aligns with the FLETC’s mission.
