The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) provides operations support services and business solutions to the community of 10,000 House Members, Officers and staff. The CAO organization comprises more than 650 technical and administrative staff working in a variety of areas, including information technology, finance, budget management, human resources, payroll, child care, food and vending, procurement, logistics and administrative counsel.

As a founding member of the new House Digital Service, you will be a part of a first-of-its-kind team in the legislative branch tasked with expanding institutional capacity and technology adoption. You will have a significant impact on the operational and technical foundations of the team, and will continually seek out ways to enable House Member Offices and Committees to better perform their Constitutional duties.

As a User Experience Designer you will drive research activities, derive insights, generate concepts, communicate those concepts visually, and work with developers and product managers to build and test them. This designer will need to have deep strength in user research best practices.

As a UX designer, you’ll work in cross-functional teams of experts in design, product strategy, technical architecture, and software engineering. In addition to building useful and usable digital services, you will be helping the organization improve their user-centered design practice and helping augment teams without those practices get started.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Support collaborative decision making by telling compelling stories drawn from research to build shared understanding.
  • Show persistent commitment to thoughtful, inclusive, ethical user research.
  • Deliver whatever’s needed to guide development — this could include wireframes, sitemaps, flowcharts, storyboards, user stories, or other innovative approaches.
  • Create written materials and visual presentations that are accessible to non-experts as well as being legally and technically accurate.
  • Commit to making what we build fully accessible.
  • Create a work environment that fosters trust, respect, and collaboration.
  • Clearly communicate user-centered methods and their value to non-designers.
  • Share knowledge, techniques, tools, patterns, and expert advice with colleagues, partners, and the public.
  • Contribute to team-wide resources and training materials, including methods, tutorials, guides, presentations, and design toolkits.
  • Ad hoc projects that emerge as priorities for the institution.

Please submit a cover letter with your application.
