Summary

This position is located within the Pasture Systems and Watershed Management Research Unit at the University of Massachusetts Cranberry Station in East Wareham, MA. The incumbent will support research projects investigating precision agricultural practices and conducting agroecosystem modeling on active cranberry farms and ecologically restored sites. Deploying, maintaining, troubleshooting environmental sensors and irrigation systems, and assisting with UAV flights are some responsibilities.

Duties

Help
  • Maintain, calibrates and modifies complex/specialized equipment and automated systems (e.g. data loggers) used for test and evaluation procedures.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot irrigation systems. Maintains electronic sensors, data loggers, field equipment, in addition to laboratory and computational resources.
  • Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages (e.g. R, Python, GIS).
  • Collects, prepares, evaluates and verifies samples and supporting records. Performs highly complex techniques with unusual skill.
  • Searches for literature pertinent to precision agriculture/environmental science for new procedures or techniques to use in the field and laboratory. Contributes ideas towards the planning and sequencing of the technical aspects of the research.
  • Adapts, modifies or develops new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project. Independently initiates action to resolve or correct technical difficulties and results, or recommends resolution to supervisor.
  • Collects and analyze soil, water, gas, and vegetation samples in the field and lab, gauging and installing monitoring wells, conducting topographical surveys, and maintaining laboratory and computational resources.
  • Manage and process environmental data sets.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

Qualifying experience for GS-8 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-7 level; or its non-Federal equivalent which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in one or more phases of a research project or field work in environmental science and precision agriculture; recording or analyzing scientific environmental data; and operating and maintaining computational systems and scientific equipment.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include hydrology, agricultural engineering, agricultural sciences, environmental or natural resources sciences, civil engineering, or geological engineering.

OR

A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above.

Qualifying experience for the GS-9 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-8 level; or its non-Federal equivalent which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting a research project or field work in environmental science and precision agriculture; processing and statistically analyzing environmental data using modern computational techniques; assisting and preparing reports to summarize research progress and results.

OR

Education: Two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include hydrology, agricultural engineering, agricultural sciences, environmental or natural resources sciences, civil engineering, or geological engineering.

OR

A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
