Duties

Help
  • Evaluate monitoring data obtained by subordinate personnel to determine if the results obtained are accurate and acceptable.
  • Conduct training on general industrial hygiene topics, to include hazard communication, respiratory protection, personal protective equipment use, hearing conservation, ergonomics, and confined space entry requirements.
  • Conduct special studies, surveys, and assistance visits for Department of Defense organizations on a variety of industrial hygiene issues.
  • Coordinate, identify, and has overall responsibility for the conduct of inspections of complex, high hazard work areas.

  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

  • The employee will be required to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance as a condition of employment, as the incumbent may enter restricted areas.
  • The employee may be required to lift up to 25 pounds . in the regular performance of duties.
  • Incumbent is required during normal duties to work long hours in uncomfortable climates, such as very hot and humid, or cold, wet weather, and wear uncomfortable protective and safety clothing and equipment when conducting industrial hygiene surveys.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and/or education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR

Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.

GS-11 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience, which includes conducting studies or surveys, compiling or analyzing data, and maintaining industrial hygiene equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

OR

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

GS-12 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting on-site surveys to evaluate conditions which may be hazardous to workers' health; recognizing, evaluating and eliminating of environmental conditions in the workplace that causes sickness, impaired health, or illness to workers; and developing methods for the control of health hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11)

Education
