Basic Education Requirement for a Geographer:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in utilizing knowledge of geographic methods, data management, and cartographic practices and techniques used in engineering planning and analysis activities in support of a variety of water-resource related projects, specifically navigation maintenance dredging. Must be able to work independently with engineers, project managers, scientists, and other professionals to identify and develop GIS products and best practices. Creates and supports databases that promote spatial data management concepts and can support custom applications and analysis techniques unique to the navigation community. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
