  • You will serve as a Geospatial Information System (GIS) expert to accomplish the following:
  • Plan, coordinate and implement digital data and mapping in remote sensing, photogrammetry, hydrographic surveys, topography and land surveying.
  • Develop GEO-referenced digital databases to analyze, interpret and correlate data of a broad nature and with complex variables.
  • Collaborate with the GIS Mapping and CADD section on project development teams to find the most efficient ways to accomplish GIS work on projects.
  • Ensure compliance with current Corps-wide GIS standards.
  • Serve as a technical specialist in generating Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) compliant metadata for geodatabases created.
  • Develop tutorials for enterprise data management including metadata documentation and spatial data standards.
  • Attend professional meetings, seminars, and training courses to maintain current knowledge of technical advances and applications.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Basic Education Requirement for a Geographer:
A.
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in utilizing knowledge of geographic methods, data management, and cartographic practices and techniques used in engineering planning and analysis activities in support of a variety of water-resource related projects, specifically navigation maintenance dredging. Must be able to work independently with engineers, project managers, scientists, and other professionals to identify and develop GIS products and best practices. Creates and supports databases that promote spatial data management concepts and can support custom applications and analysis techniques unique to the navigation community. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Education

About the Position: The Portland District staff oversees the operation and maintenance of 19 multi-purpose dams in Oregon and a sediment retention structure in southwestern Washington. We also maintain more than 720 miles of federal navigation channels and 33 channel and harbor projects through the use of two government-owned hopper dredges and three hydrographic survey vessels.
