Summary

NASA seeks to fill two (2) Research Scientist positions in the Biospheric Sciences Laboratory within the Earth Sciences Division of the Sciences and Exploration Directorate. The AERONET Technical Lead will have primary responsibility for day-to-day operations of the network. The AERONET Science Lead will have primary responsibility for project alignment with current and future satellite missions, field campaigns, and other ground networks to advance understanding of aerosols in the Earth system.

  • Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Conduct cutting-edge research on atmospheric aerosols.
  • Analyze, interpret, and apply data from ground-based, airborne, and satellite remote sensing instruments.
  • Design and implement new research studies to understand the impact of aerosols in the Earth system (e.g., field campaigns and investigations that leverage multiple remote sensing platforms and/or Earth system models).
  • Lead a team that collects data, calibrates, and distributes data provided by the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET), an international ground-based network of sun photometer instruments.
  • Advise NASA scientists and Program Managers on aerosol research, future satellite or airborne missions to study aerosols, and the contribution from aerosols to climate change.
  • Share research findings with the science community through peer-reviewed publications and engage the broader public using online and in-person presentations, web content, and written material intended for non-specialists.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. A review may be required to determine the appropriate grade level of the position and supplemental materials may be required from the selectee. Please keep this in mind when indicating the lowest grade you will accept.

To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in:

  • The design and application of concepts, advanced computing techniques, and methods in mathematics, physics, remote sensing, or physical science to conduct research and make predictions about the atmosphere, or interactions between the atmosphere, land surface, and oceans.
  • Experience in the calibration and application of remote sensing instruments (e.g., ground-based, airborne, or satellite) to study atmospheric aerosols.
  • Experience designing and executing scientific research on atmospheric aerosols, aerosol impacts on climate and air quality, and the state of Earth's atmosphere, including data collection, analysis, and reporting of results.

To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level:
  • Leading others in a team environment to design and apply concepts, advanced computing techniques, and methods in mathematics, physics, remote sensing, or physical science to conduct research and make predictions about the atmosphere, or interactions between the atmosphere, land surface, and oceans.
  • Experience designing and executing research on the state of the Earth's atmosphere, aerosols and other particulate matter, and interactions between aerosols and the physical climate system.
  • Experience in the design, development, calibration, and application of ground-based, airborne, or satellite remote sensing instruments to study atmospheric aerosols.

Education

You must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.
*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.
