Summary

This position is part of the Eastern Region, Morgantown Field Office, Forest Health & Forest Markets staff and will be located in Morgantown, WV.

The incumbent performs a variety of professional entomology tasks on a Forest Service unit. The position will be filled at the GS-11 level, with promotion to the target grade GS-12 when eligible.

Duties

  • Duties listed below are at the GS-11 level.
  • Applies knowledge of entomology to determine extent and effects of insect infestations.
  • Evaluates and conducts insect detection surveys and biological evaluation on federal, state, tribal and/or private lands.
  • Evaluates and applies relevant aerial or ground detection information in context of resource management objectives.
  • Provides technology transfer of research findings to resource managers.
  • Plans and organizes pilot projects and field tests to determine the value of new or improved materials, strategies, or techniques for operational use in insect survey, evaluation, or control.
  • Conducts insect detection studies and determine mitigation strategies.
  • Prepares technical reports to provide recommendations for insect management techniques.
  • Assist with identifying and determining extent of effects of insect damage to develop guidelines for mitigation and prevention.
  • Target GS-12 level duties:
  • Identifies insect pests, to determine damage caused by organisms and applies appropriate control techniques.
  • Provides technical assistance on forest insect to external and internal partners to ensure proper forest management.
  • Applies knowledge and experience in entomology to determine extent and effects of insect infestations.
  • Coordinates all aspects of a complex major insect detection, evaluation, prevention, and suppression program.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:

GS-0414: Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in entomology; or a related discipline of the biological or physical sciences that included at least 16 semester hours in entomology.

OR

Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major that included course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Applicants with major fields of study in biology, zoology, or invertebrate zoology may fully meet the basic educational requirements if their academic preparation included substantive instruction (including appropriate laboratory and field work) in basic general entomology, taxonomy, physiology, ecology, general and organic chemistry, general physics, and mathematics or statistics that provided some training in the analysis of variables.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-11 level: Applicants must have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (coursework directly related to position being filled); OR one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level; OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.).

Examples of specialized experience are defined as one or more of the following: Participated in evaluation surveys to determine the status of forest insects; Participated in analysis of insect-related forest health conditions; Assisted with the development of appropriate forest health protection management alternatives; Participated in forest insect detection, evaluation, prevention, and control projects.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
