Help

As a Supervisory Geophysicist within the Earthquake Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Serves as the Chief of the USGS ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) Project and as the EEW National Coordinator to develop and operate the ShakeAlert West Coast EEW system, combining internal USGS personnel and resources with activities carried out by various ShakeAlert partners.
  • Leads the technical, organizational, and educational components of the USGS ShakeAlert Project, including developing project work plans and budgets.
  • Advises and coordinates operations of the West Coast Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS) seismic and GPS networks.
  • Acts as the primary spokesperson and representative for the ShakeAlert EEW Project to the press, the public, and other stakeholders.
  • Supervises and advises the Project Chief for the Southern California Earthquake Monitoring Project, a project which monitors and provides data about earthquakes in southern California.
Physical Demands: The work is generally sedentary in nature. However, occasional fieldwork requires moderately strenuous physical demands in sometimes, adverse conditions including stooping, reaching, lifting and carrying heavy objects, walking in treacherous terrain and working in narrow spaces.

Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in an office, lab, or computer room. There may be an occasional need to travel to field locations.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.). **OR

B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For GS-15:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in geophysics that is equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience could include conducting geophysical investigations that involved highly unstructured problems involving both difficult technology and complex human relations or programmatic issues. The results of these investigations had significant effects over a wide region of the United States, or may have included responsibility for new technology which is especially critical to the organization's programs. This work involved other recognized senior technical experts asking the scientist for advice or counsel due to his/her personal reputation in the field of geophysics.
