Duties

Help
  • Develop programs designed to inform and educate general and specialized publics about the agency's missions, activities, plans, programs and accomplishments.
  • Plan, direct and execute comprehensive national campaigns to disseminate highly technical and sometimes very politically sensitive information concerning Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) missions and programs.
  • Develop the DISA major talking points that are used by command spokespersons throughout the year in response to media and public queries.
  • Responsible for writing articles, and other materials for public release.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the news media, specialized groups, Department of Defense (DoD), and other government departments and agencies to improve their understanding of DISA programs, policies and plans.
  • Ensure implementation of DoD policy and procedures governing public affairs activities.
  • Draft, coordinate and provide responses to queries from national and international media organizations and the general public.
  • Analyze external environment for the Director and senior staff to include all factors that could influence agency objectives, programs and policies directly or indirectly, to include public and customer perceptions of issues and programs.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience:

One year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade GS-12within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required.

Specialized experience is defined as experience in public affairs planning, directing, and executing local and/or national campaigns to disseminate technical information; experience preparing talking points and speeches for senior leaders to present during internal and external public engagements; experience conducting research using computerized research tools and interviews with technical and subject matter experts; and experience surveying and analyzing news coverage of an agency's activities.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education is not substitutable for specialized experience for this grade level.
