Summary

This position is located in the Smithsonian Institution, the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery (FSG), the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, in Collections Management  for Institutional Planning.  FSG consists of two galleries located on the National Mall, containing a selection of its more than 42,000 objects dating from the Neolithic period to today.

Duties

Help

As the Head, Collections Management and Associate Director for Institutional Planning, you will supervises four museum functions and will also perform the following duties: 

  • Exercises program responsibility for the planning, coordination and direction of a full range of administration and management services for museum’s collection management.
  • Exercises decision-making authority of the registration and collections management aspects of all permanent, archival, study collection and loans at the Freer and Sackler. 
  • Manages the development of policy changes in response to changes in levels of appropriations or other legislated changes. 
  • Works with the Director, Deputy Director and managers to establish measurement systems to effectively identify and quantify the level of services and organizational performance.
  • Prepares evaluations and reports that address complex issues in planning and gallery space utilization such as the actual or potential effectiveness of programs in achieving established objectives and their impact on current resources. 
  • Ensures that departmental budgets meet the guidelines established for the Smithsonian budget calls and any other regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as leading a team of museum staff responsible for museum collection or other museum functions; providing advisory regarding administration and management services for museum or cultural institution; ensuring organization’s budgets meet the guideline established; and performing organization analysis to create to analyze and interpret data and prepare evaluations and reports.  



Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

  1. Knowledge of the planning, coordination and direction of a full range of administration and management services for museum’s collection management.
  2. Ability to oversee and supervise multiple departments including organizing and assigning work and making changes or adjustments in internal functions to better accomplish mission objectives.
  3. Skill in establishing and utilizing measurement systems to effectively identify and quantify organizational performance, analyze and interpret data and prepare evaluations and reports.
  4. Knowledge of budget rules and regulations in order to ensure organization establish guidelines and ensure regulatory requirements are met.
