This Merit Promotion position is open to Current Federal Employees and Former Federal Employees with permanent status or reinstatement eligibility. As an Exhibits Specialist (Generalist), the incumbent would perform the following duties but not limited to:

• Works with and takes directions from curators, artists, and exhibitions designers to establish a final layout of artworks in the galleries and grounds including site specific artworks and immersive whole room installations.
• Participates in exhibit installations and object handling, including fabricating exhibit components and/or interactive prototypes.
• Cleans exhibition casework, vitrines, and components in galleries; assists with preparation of new lighting and works on routine maintenance of existing lighting in galleries.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as handling and/or installing modern and contemporary artwork; fabricating exhibit components for exhibition installations; cleaning exhibition casework and vitrines in galleries; and conducting routine maintenance on audio, visual, and interaction exhibition elements.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education in a related field may be substituted for the required experience. Such fields include illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or other fields related to the position.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above.  The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

1. Knowledge and ability of art handling and art installation including the specific methods and techniques utilized in museum practice.
2. Ability to develop and fabricate exhibit elements of all shapes, sizes, and weights from layouts, drawings, sketches, and diagrams
3. Knowledge of exhibits maintenance, fire/safety procedures, security, and facilities management procedures as they pertain to the production and installation of exhibits.
