Summary

About the Position: Incumbent will work at the Directorate of Public Works Operations & Maintenance Division Bldg & Ground Br, Locks/Metal at JBLM, WA.

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for positions involved in and supporting DoD maintenance and repair activities, such as maintenance and repair of weapon systems, hardware, equipment installation infrastructure to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

Help
  • Analyze diagnostic test readings and operating conditions to determine causes of equipment failures and system malfunctions.
  • Follow proper lock out and tag out procedures to control hazardous energy in order to safely perform maintenance and repair activities.
  • Perform maintenance and repair on commercial and industrial units and systems that provide heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R).
  • Obtain correct replacement parts by comparison with samples, use of part catalogs, computer searches, and operations and maintenance manuals.
  • Monitor, interrogate, inspect, test, adjust and make repairs to various types of system controls and related components; electric, electronic systems, pneumatic, microprocessor (Direct Digital Control DDC) and mixed control systems.
  • Utilize an electronic multi-meter test instrument to measure voltage, resistance or current when troubleshooting failures or to verify equipment is de-energized.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common maintenance tasks at facilities with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units. I am able to replace portions of various cooling units, e.g., compressors, condensers, expansion valves, float and service values, thermostats, coils, drive assemblies; repairing water coolers. I am skilled in maintenance on equipment in large facilities, changing filters, cleaning strainers. I am skilled in troubleshooting and replacing heating systems and replacing defective parts such as thermostats, switches, fuel cutoff apparatus, burners, fuel feed and flame safeguard controls. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: Stoops, stretches, bends, kneels for long periods of time and works in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. Equipment worked on is large and must be moved in and out of specific locations. Frequently sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier. Weight handling equipment is available when handling large units, up t by o 6000 lb. Ladders, scaffolds and platforms may be used when working on large systems or roofs. Must be able to distinguish basic or shades of colors to prevent risk of electrical shock when wiring equipment.
  • Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside under all weather conditions. Exposed to possibility of broken bones from falls from ladders or scaffolds. Requires wearing of protective safety equipment (respirators, shoes, glasses, ear protection). Possibility of burns and/or electrocution when working on electrical equipment (24 to 460 volts). May be called upon to perform asbestos abatement, encapsulation and repair.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job you must meet the qualification requirement using experience along - no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
