Summary

This position is located in the Smithsonian Institution, National Museum African American History and Culture. The Digital Curator collaborates with museum colleagues to create innovative digital experiences for diverse audiences to increase access and engagement with the museum’s collections, exhibitions, educational resources, and public programming. The Digital Curator is also responsible for creating original digital content and experiences that serve existing and new museum audiences.

Duties

Help
  • Develops original digital content and experiences that are timely, relevant, and make visible the impact of African Americans on living history.
  • Performs research as it relates to informing, educating, and engaging visitors to the Museum, online public program participants, and key digital audience segments.
  • Uses established and accepted scholarly methodology to develop original works (publications, articles, essays, interactive experiences) made publicly accessible through the Museum's digital channels and platforms.
  • Leads the planning, production, and implementation of original, digital exhibitions and online initiatives that reach and engage new audiences using innovative digital storytelling techniques and emerging technologies
  • Supervises staff.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade 13 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as conceptualizing, planning, and implementing complex digital initiatives, online exhibitions, and virtual programs that engage and educate a diverse public for museum or similar cultural entity.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Education

This position requires a Degree in museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field.
or

Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
or

Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in A above.
