This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for positions involved in and supporting DoD maintenance and repair activities, such as maintenance and repair of weapon systems, hardware, equipment installation infrastructure to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

Help
  • Follow oral or written instructions and perform installation, repair, or maintenance on boiler plant and auxiliary equipment. Work is reviewed upon completion for adherence to quality standards.
  • Selects tools, materials, parts, methods and techniques to use in accordance with standard trade practices.
  • Utilize common tools of the trade such as sliding squares, measuring tapes, dividers, chalk lines, plumb bobs, templates, star drills, grinders, hand and power pipe threaders and cutters and pipe wrenches and gas leak detector.
  • Reinstall various components of such systems as boilers, steam generators, radiators, circulating pumps, various brands and types of steam traps, various types of stop valves, pressure relief valves, water make up controls, etc.
  • Utilize technical manuals, manufacturers', manuals, and special instructions to determine whether replacement, service, or repair of key parts or components of the heating system is required.
  • Maintain equipment by checking pipes, pipe joints, and insulation for leakage, signs of deterioration, or damage to maximize equipment life.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Prior to onboarding you must obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Prior to onboarding you are required to take pre-employment physical.
  • You must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • The employee must obtain and maintain within 18 months of appointment a Current Class IV Boiler Fireman License or equivalent which limits the certified operator of a boiler plant not exceeding an aggregate of 20MBTU/HR.
  • Pursuant to EO 14043, all Federal employees, regardless of duty location or work arrangement, must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 by November 22, 2021, or before entrance on duty if after November 22, subject to exceptions as required by law.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common maintenance and repair tasks including performing installation, repair, or maintenance on facility boilers, to include boiler plants and auxiliary equipment . I can repair pipe systems that carry water, steam, air, or other liquids or gases. I may assist in installing heating and cooling equipment. I am able to determine the correct power tools, and equipment to use. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Employee is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions and where equipment is worked on in hard to reach places. Work requires considerable overhead work that must be done from extension ladders, staging, forklifts, and structural support beams. Frequently lifts and carries item weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. Exposed to the possibility of burns from steam and high temperature hot water, and heat exhaustion from working in heating distribution manholes. Exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes and bruises; occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones from falls from ladders and/or platforms. Subject to the possibility of electric shock. Exposed to explosive nature of combustible gas. Frequently exposed to asbestos when removing insulation and carcinogens from fuel lines. Required wearing protective clothing and breathing apparatus (respirator).
