Help

As a Interdisciplinary Research Chemist/Research Geologist within Geology, Energy and Minerals, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Conducts original research using geochemical approaches to answer scientific questions related to oil and gas wastewaters from hydrocarbon reservoirs and geochemical aspects of energy systems including unconventional oil and gas systems.
  • Identifies and prioritizes unknown parameters relevant to these areas of study and develops research approaches to address these unknowns using appropriate field and/or laboratory studies.
  • Works with and/or leads a team of scientists addressing unknown questions in the geochemistry of energy materials such as source rocks, oil and gas reservoirs, and including wastewater characterization, treatment, and reuse.
  • Conduct research on some of the following disciplines: stable isotopes as they relate to water in energy-related materials, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), and microbial systems.
  • Evaluate and interpret existing data using advanced statistical techniques or machine learning, to inform regional studies of energy resources and their associated byproducts.
  • Publishes results of research as journal articles, USGS publications, book chapters, abstracts, and similar outlets following USGS Fundamental Science Practices and presents results of research findings at scientific and professional meetings where the USGS is represented.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR CHEMIST, GS-1320: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Chemist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics.

B. A combination of education and experience-course work equivalent to a major as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering), including at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent of physics, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. BASIC
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR GEOLOGIST, GS-1350: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. In addition to the basic education requirement described above, applicants must also meet one of the following:

Possess one year of appropriate professional experience that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level that is in or related to the duties described above, such as planning, originating, and conducting original and creative research in water geochemistry, energy geochemistry, or organic/inorganic chemistry. Such work must have shown creative and outstanding research that has led or can lead to advances in these fields of research. The work must have been creative in the sense that it developed a basic principle, product, concept, method, approach, or technique, or provided a body of basic information that opened the way for an advance in the discipline or field of science. This work may have been achieved by providing a method of solving problems, opening areas of researcher providing the means of exploring the application of science.

**OR Possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a directly related field of study.

**OR Possess a combination of successfully completed progressive graduate level education, as described above, that is beyond the second year of graduate study and professional experience, as described above.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are as follows:

1. Ability to conceive, plan, and conduct research efforts related to geology and/or natural resources using geochemical approaches. Please specify the type of geology and natural resource that was studied, especially anything related to hydrocarbon reservoirs or water chemistry.

2. Knowledge of and ability to publish research results. Please be clear whether these results were published in internal reports for your organization (and whether they were disseminated publicly) and/or if they were published in professional peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, please specify your authorship (i.e., first author vs. contributing or co-author).

3. Knowledge of geochemistry, specifically with respect to collection of data and interpretation of results. Please include disciplines (e.g., organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, isotope geochemistry, etc.) and instrumentation (e.g., ICP-MS, GC, SEM, XRD etc.) you are familiar with, along with expertise in interpretation methods (e.g., Monte Carlo simulation, modeling, machine learning, geostatistics, Python, etc.).

4. Knowledge of and experience in produced waters, water characterization/treatment/reuse, source rock geochemistry, organic or inorganic chemistry, naturally occurring radioactive materials, microbial systems.
