Duties

Help

As a Safety & Occupational Health Specialist, the incumbent will perform the following, but not limited to:

  • Assists with managing safety programs by conducting investigations regarding mishaps, accidents and/or employee complaints and ensuring compliance to safety standards and procedures in various work environments.
  • Coordinates all aspects of inspections including planning and conducting inspections in a variety of work environments; identifying hazards; reviewing work processes, conditions, and previous surveys; visiting various work sites and locations; obtaining evidence of violations and providing assistance to resolve hazards encountered.
  • Assists with the compilation and summarization of information for annual safety reports; prepares reports, analyzes data using various programs and policies, develops recommendations  when warranted.
  • Creates and disseminates written information to employees regarding the safety program. Information can include, but is not limited to publications, posters and charts, and training materials for employees and supervisors.

Qualifications

Experience for GS-0018-11: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as: Investigating accidents and employee complaints, inspecting work sites, work operations and conditions to ensure compliance, preparing reports using data to resolve issues and propose recommendations, and preparing written information to train employees in safety practices and techniques.

Or Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M in safety occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
