Duties

Help

The Public Affairs Specialist will perform a range of public affairs and community outreach duties that involve the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Duties include:

  • Plans, coordinates, and disseminates public information, and writes press releases, speeches, and other public and internal statements.
  • Maintains relationships and communicates regularly with representatives of newspapers, radio and television stations, and major magazines to disseminate the messaging of the office and respond to press inquiries.
  • Researches and analyzes potentially newsworthy activities of the office to determine whether and how to communicate with the public on those matters, considering social media as well as traditional media outlets.
  • Plans, maintains, and updates a computer database of all press contacts, enabling pinpoint targeting of case-specific information to its specific audiences.
  • Helps manage and maintain a website for the most complete and effective communication with members of the public.
  • Evaluates the impact and effectiveness of oral and written communications, advising representatives whether the communications should be modified to better achieve desired results.
  • Ensures articles and broadcast segments concerning cases are directed to the appropriate employees.

Qualifications

GS-12: To be eligible at the GS-12 level, you must meet one full year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level.

Specialized Experience is defined as establishing & maintaining effective & professional working relationships with print & broadcast media representatives, assuring the media receives accurate & timely information & responses while establishing & maintaining channels for proper dissemination of public information; developing & writing information materials provided through news media & the legal community including news releases on breaking & feature stories, background information, biographical material, & articles on program commitments & priorities; ensuring all information & materials prepared & released accurately reflect the policies, views & program initiatives; planning, maintaining, & updating public information posted about newsworthy events on a website & multiple social media accounts & coordinates with management & administrative staff on information to be included on the website; interpreting information gathered & making recommendations for media action upon request; responding to requests for information that are extremely sensitive & controversial that requires consideration of security, freedom of information, & privacy act requirements.

Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
