Duties

Help
  • You will manufacture and install masts, booms. spars, yardarms, ceiling planks, caulk seams and butts with cotton, oakum and marine glue.
  • You will replace and repair structural members such as knees and beams.
  • You will use basic hand tools, table saws, band saws, jointers and other shop machinery.
  • You will produce various types of heavy forgings occasionally exceeding 500 lbs. or more and using stock with a cross sectional area of 28 square inches or more.
  • You will conduct inspections including borings and removals in areas suspected of internal decay.
  • You will work from blue prints, sample parts, templates, sketches, or verbal instructions, lays out metal to be forged.

In addition to the Screen-out Element, applicants must demonstrate the ability to perform tasks including manufacturing and installing masts and yards; fitting, steaming, bending and securing hull planking, using steam boxes and bending tables; manufacturing, installing, repairing and replacing structural members, caulking seams and butts with cotton, oakum and marine glue; fitting, bending and securing hull planking; using repair and production methods of forging including forge-welding, brazing, riveting, fullering, and other methods such as annealing, stress relieving and tempering to produce metal parts such as crowbars, blank discs, chain links and beams; working aloft at heights in excess of 150 ft.; using basic hand tools, table saws, band saws and shop machinery; working from blueprints using transit instruments; plotting and establishing reference points and benchmarks.
