The EPA OIG is seeking seeking volunteers for Summer 2022. The EPA OIG offers positions for students interested in seeking valuable work experience in government and designed to complement the interns educational pursuits while meeting the expressed needs of the agency. Volunteers have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the mission of the EPA OIG to prevent and detect fraud, waste, and abuse. 

Positions are available in the following offices located in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities
Candidates for these internships are individuals pursuing Juris Doctorate (J.D.) in general law. Acceptance of applications of the this announcement will be limited to first-year (second semester), second and third-year law students. We are only accepting the first 100 applicants. This vacancy will close after the applicant limit is reached. 

All volunteers are required to sign the Participant Agreement (will be competed later during the security process if selected).

Applicants must meet the definition of a “Student” at the time of appointment and throughout the duration of the appointment.

Student means an individual who has been accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled).

At the time of appointment, applicant must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age. 
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited institution. 
  • Attend an accredited law school.
  • Have permission from the institution at which he/she is currently enrolled to participate in the internship program, if applicable. 
  • Must be enrolled on a, at least, half-time basis in a course of study related to the work to be performed.

This is a Public Trust Position. Employment in this position requires a background investigation. If you are selected and cannot obtain a favorable security determination within a reasonable period of time due to disclosed or undisclosed background issues, the tentative employment offer may be withdrawn.

Selectees will be required to complete a "Declaration of Federal Employment", (OF-306), prior to being appointed to determine their suitability for Federal employment and to authorize a background investigation. False statements or responses on your resume or questionnaire can jeopardize your employment opportunity and subject you to disciplinary action, including removal from Federal service. 

If you are a male born after December 31, 1959 you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law.

Qualifications

To be eligible for an internship opportunity you must meet the following criteria:

  1. You must be a current student enrolled at least half time in: 
    • A qualifying educational institution pursuing a degree, or a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school), or a post-secondary homeschool curriculum that has been accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education)
    • A certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum;
    • Students who take online courses are eligible to participate so long as all other requirements are met and the school is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education.
  2. Acceptance of applications for this announcement will be limited to first-year (second semester), second and third-year law students. 
  3. You must have a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least a 2.0. 
  4. You must be at least 16 years of age.

Education

Mandatory Education Requirement. All applicants must meet one of the following requirements to qualify: 

You MUST maintain status as a student for the duration of this program. If you are graduating in Spring 2022 and not pursuing additional education in Fall 2022, you are not eligible for this program.

The qualification requirements must be met within 90 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Additional information

Appointees may be extended or reappointed under this program without further competition. Upon successful completion of the program and at the agency's discretion, the appointee may be converted to a permanent position in the competitive service.
