Duties

Help
  • Performs the full range of standardized forestry support duties for assigned resource area(s) such as timber, silviculture, recreation, wilderness, or research activities.
  • Assists in one or more of the following duties: cruising timber by following specific instructions on taking and recording simple measurements and running compass lines in the field using compass and chain.
  • Noting compliance with rules and regulations on parking, campfire, sanitation, use of picnic sites, or hunting and fishing; maintaining and cleaning up recreation/wilderness areas.
  • Performing various standard duties related to silviculture activities. Uses tools such as crosscut saws, adze, axes, and hand tools to maintain wilderness areas, facilities, and trails.
  • Assists in wildlife or fisheries habitat improvement work by performing specific tasks in wildlife stand improvement. Performs trail maintenance to meet established trail standards.
  • Improves the quality of wilderness areas by reducing erosion at campsites and restoring the area's natural vegetation.
  • Clears and dismantles abandoned camps, packs out garbage and occasionally helps develop and present Leave No Trace camping programs.
  • Takes and/or records basic measurements such as compass readings, distance measurements, tree heights, tree diameters, tree growth, and determines common species.
  • Receives training on marking trees for cutting using tools such as Spiegel Relaskop, clinometer, compass, chain, diameter tape, increment borer, electronic field data recorder, etc.
  • Performs data collection from a checklist for use in inventorying and monitoring resources.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

GS-03: Applicants must have six months of any type of work that demonstrated the ability to perform the work of the position or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation; OR successful completion of 1 year of study above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in a combination of courses such as range management or conservation, agriculture, forestry, wildlife management, engineering, biology, mathematics, or other natural or physical sciences; OR an appropriate combination of general experience and education above high school as described above; OR completion of an intensive, specialized course of study of less than one year at a technical school or through a military or government sponsored training program that was designed specifically as career preparation for the work of the position being filled. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, technical school, junior college, college or university.

Examples of General Experience includes: Performed farm/ranch labor, such as feeding and tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities; Worked in a greenhouse or nursery moving, watering, and tending plants and performing other general labor tasks; Fed and watered animals, such as in a laboratory, pet store, or zoo; Any work experience, paid or unpaid. Unpaid experience, for example, may be regular volunteer work, such as at a park, community sports league facilities, etc.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Additional information

PLEASE NOTE: This vacancy is being used to fill positions for FY2022 Temporary Employment Hiring season. The expected start date for this position will be between June 19, 2022 and September 25, 2022.

This position is temporary, has a Not-to-Exceed date and will be filled for up to 6 months or as a not to exceed (NTE) 1 year, however an extension of the appointment may be possible without further competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or lack of funds.
