Duties

Help
  • You will plan, research, and prepare original studies, monographs, briefings, booklets, articles, scripts, chronologies, exhibits labels, and other products that furnish detailed historical background and perspective to Navy issues.
  • You will provide historical support and information to high-ranking civilian personnel and Navy leaders and planners in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV).
  • You will investigate and define past events and provide in depth analysis of these events.
  • You will provide perspective on historical events of the purpose of educating military and civilian personnel about the history and heritage of the U.S. Navy.
  • You will demonstrate a thorough understanding and assessment of the materials and the ability to independently plan and execute the research and writing of historical products.
  • You will be required to respond to naval history inquiries from OPNAV.
  • You will edit or transcribe historical documents.
  • You will collect and analyze historical documents.
  • You will organize and direct his/her own projects and may divide the work into smaller segments.
  • You will conduct research as necessary.

Qualifications

You will serve as a Historian within the Histories and Archives Division of the NAVAL HISTORY AND HERITAGE COMMAND.

GS-09 Level:
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following duties: (1) Assisting with researching of current and historic issues; (2) Supporting the planning, researching, preparing original studies, monographs, briefings, booklets, articles, chronologies, and other products that furnish detailed historical background and perspective; (3) Defining past events; (4) Preparing interview questions, and processing interviews; and (5) Assisting with the editing or transcribing historical documents.

GS-11 Level:
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following duties: (1) Researching of current and historic issues; (2) Planning, researching, preparing original studies, monographs, briefings, booklets, articles, chronologies, and other products that furnish detailed historical background and perspective; (3) Investigating and defining past events and provide analysis of these events to prepare leadership and effectively deal with problems; (4) Participating in interviews, preparing interview questions, and processing interviews; (5) Editing or transcribing historical documents; and (6) Providing interpretive and intellectual support for public outreach functions to include multimedia presentations, online features, education programs, and presentations.

Education


Basic Education Requirement:

A. Degree: history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

The following can be substituted in order to meet the minimum qualification requirements of this position at the GS-09 Level:
2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree
OR
master's or equivalent graduate degree
OR
a combination of graduate education and experience totaling 100%.


The following can be substituted in order to meet the minimum qualification requirements of this position at the GS-11 Level:
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
OR
3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree
OR
a combination of graduate education and experience totaling 100%.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.

This position is eligible for part time, full time or ad-hoc telework at the discretion of management.
