Anticipated Projects and Deliverables:

The Social Media Specialist will work with the External Relations team under guidance of the Director of Digital Communications and Marketing and would be responsible for the following:

Developing, implementing, and analyzing Social Media Strategy, detailed plans, and content.

  • Ensures consistency and quality of content across all social media outlets for Wilson Center programmatic activity and individual areas of concentrated focus as requested by the VP of External Relations and Wilson Center Executive Office including the Twitter account for Wilson Center President and CEO.
  • Writes, edits, and designs social media postings utilizing text, video, audio, and images employing appropriate security, copyright, domain names, trademark, Wilson Center policy, industry standards and applicable e-marketing and e-commerce laws.
  • Build and engage with a digital audience for live Wilson Center events.
  • Package and market existing content such as event webcasts, podcasts, videos, and articles for social media consumption.
  • Compiles data from Google Analytics and other resources for status reports.
  • Monitors social media trends and investigates/identifies new platforms for the Wilson Center utilizing competitive research, social analytics, benchmarking, and audience identification.
  • Monitors and tracks social media platforms, including mentions of high profile events, speakers and accomplishments of the Center for inappropriate content or policy breaches and take appropriate action.
  • Writes engaging, informed, appropriate posts to promote Wilson Center events/activities and engage in conversant, written prose on all Wilson Center social media platforms and the Twitter account for the President and Chief Executive Officer.
  • Creates and maintains a Center-wide online social media calendar/plan. Working with individual programs and the Executive team to collect information on short-term and long-term event plans and coordinating with other External Relations staff for maximum exposure and impact.
  • Expand social media reach and areas (topics) covered by increased postings on all platforms.

Using Social Media to Engage and Educate Staff and Audiences:

  • Acts as a social media resource to the Center and its programs, sharing best practice and providing information on how work can be highlighted and maximized with social media.
  • Creates and disseminates social media campaign plans for high-level events and other communication initiatives to appropriate staff.
  • Uses and administers a password management platform to securely store and share passwords among program staff and social media properties.
  • Communicates highlights and items of interest to the External Relations Team for internal/external promotional use.
  • Promotes and organizes use of social media outlets such as Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA), Instameets, Google hangouts or other digital learning technology as part of organized strategy.
  • Builds meaningful connections and encourages engagement with Wilson Center programming and topical areas on all social media platforms.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one full-time year (12-months) of specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the Grade 7 level (relative to federal and/or market standards) performing the following duties and responsibilities: 

  • Able to plan, develop, and implement social media strategy and campaigns
  • Able to analyze results from social media campaigns and make recommendations for action
  • Able to develop social media posts using text and images to promote content, events, special initiatives, etc.
  • Able to securely manage various social media platforms and users
  • Able to build and engage digital audiences for events
  • Serves as a social media resource sharing best practices and trainings

Superior Academic Achievement: You completed all requirements for a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college AND meet one of the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement: (1) class standing(upper third standing in graduating class based on completed courses); or (2) grade-point average (3.0 overall or over the last two years of bachelor's degree -or- 3.5 in my major field or over the last two years in my major); or (3) election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. Honor societies are listed by the Association of College Honor Societies.

OR

Graduate Education: You successfully completed at least one full year (18 semester hours or equivalent) of graduate level education. This education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: You have a combination of specialized experience and graduate education described above. This education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. 

A degree in marketing, public relations, journalism or mass communication with experience in social media platforms, current knowledge in international affairs and U.S. foreign policy are highly desirable.

Note: The “relative market standards” is defined based on the knowledge required to do the work, complexity of the work performed, independence in conducting the work, and regular/recurring contacts.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
