Help

A Physiatrist - Service Chief is a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&RS) physician who has completed residency training in an accredited program and has completed Board Certification by the American Board of PM&RS or is eligible for Board Certification. This position will specifically require an expert level of knowledge and skills in multiple facets of rehabilitation. The physician will have broad based skills in the diagnosis and treatment of the full spectrum of acute and chronic rehabilitation conditions and be able to provide rehabilitation consultation services for these patient populations. This position will serve as the Medical Director of the Chronic Pain Inpatient and Virtual Program.

Major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing expert level clinical care in PM&R specific evaluations, diagnoses and treatment including using telehealth modalities.
  • Utilizing effective communication skills at all levels to enhance team functioning, patient care coordination, and leadership.
  • Providing clinical care for all general rehabilitation populations.
  • Developing, implementing and documenting the PM&R treatment plan for an assigned caseload of patients, including prompt completion of clinical reminders.
  • Providing education to patients, family members and significant others.
  • Demonstrating knowledge about established and evolving biomedical, clinical and cognate sciences and their application in patient care.
  • Demonstrating skills that result in effective information exchange and teaming with patients, their families and professional associates.
  • Developing innovative educational materials and processes to enhance the expertise of providers from a wide array of backgrounds, within the National VA, medical center, university, the community, and within VISN 8.
  • Developing innovative educational materials and processes to enhance patient and family education.
  • Providing clinical supervision & instruction for PM&RS Residents, as well as medical students as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Residency or Comparable Experience: Completion of a residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
    • A Physiatrist - Service Chief is a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&RS) physician who has completed residency training in an accredited program AND has completed Board Certification by the American Board of PM&RS or is eligible for Board Certification. If board eligible, board certification is required at the earliest available time after meeting the necessary board requirements.
  • Licensure and Registration: Physicians must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the state of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
  • English Language Proficiency: Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work are generally minor. The work is primarily sedentary (4-6 hrs.) although, there is some walking, bending, and some extended periods of standing (4 hours).
