As an ARCHIVIST, you will:

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

  • Arrange and review both unclassified presidential records and prepares finding aids for requestors and future researchers.
  • Respond to reference requests to regular and complex e-mail, phone, and written requests for information regarding the Library's textual, electronic, and non-textual holdings.
  • Responsible for devising, implementing, and maintaining location registers for physical control of the holdings within the Library.
  • Plan and direct the arrangement of presidential records, federal records, and donated materials.
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly and quarterly narrative and statistical reports, and FOIA statistics.
  • Apply preservation techniques and recommends strategies for textual records, electronic records, and audiovisual materials.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.

For the GS-12, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:

- Experience utilizing archival principles in order to maintain and administer record keeping systems; AND
- Experience designing and executing communications strategies, plans, or activities in order to perform activities geared towards ultimately connecting researchers with archival records (i.e. activities at every point of the archival life cycle: accessioning, processing, description, reference);
AND
- Experience leading projects.

For the GS-11, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
-Experience utilizing various systems or databases to locate, analyze, index, and manage archival records; AND
- Experience collaborating and participating in projects describing or preserving a body of records; AND
- Experience executing communication strategies, plans, or activities.
OR
You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.

NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 36 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) of graduate education is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

For the GS-9, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:

- Experience researching and reporting on archival records; AND
- Experience providing customer service to various audiences through oral and written communication techniques.
OR
2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.

NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (i.e., beyond the first year) of graduate education is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

For the GS-07, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:

-Preforming archival functions, such as monitoring, researching and managing documents; AND
-Experience communicating and assisting with various audiences.
OR
1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.

NOTE: Only education in excess of the basic education requirement (i.e., beyond Bachelor's degree) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:

For the GS-12, you must have been at the GS-11 level for 52 weeks.
For the GS-11, you must have been at the GS-09 level for 52 weeks.
For the GS-09, you must have been at the GS-07 level for 52 weeks.
For the GS-07, you must have been at the GS-05 level for 52 weeks.

Education

Basic Education Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.

OR

Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
