Duties

Help
  • Performs a variety of duties related to carrying out a coordinated natural resources conservation program to assist customers in meeting their needs and the needs of NRCS and USDA.
  • Serves as a Natural Resources Specialist with responsibility for assisting in implementing a broad-based natural resources program for the agency.
  • Assist higher-level specialists with conducting long and short-term scientific studies and investigations on the use of soils, water, vegetation, wildlife, and other natural resources as part of the land management and natural resources program.
  • Assist the District Conservationist with coordinating surveys, performs monitoring, complies/ analyzes biological data, and prepares reports using statistical inference where applicable.
  • Assist with conducting short term scientific studies using conventional techniques for developing baseline information on birds, fish, and small animals, including their habitat, growth limitations, and feeding requirements.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Education Requirement:
Degree
: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Note: For a degree in a related discipline to be acceptable for consideration, it must include 24 semester hours in subject areas described above.

In addition to meeting one of the Basic Requirements listed above, applicants must meet the following Minimum Qualifications Requirement in order to be considered:

GS-0401-05:
To Qualify for the GS-05 level, Applicants must meet the basic requirements.

GS-0401-07 Specialized Experience:

Specialized Experience: To qualify for the GS-07 level, you must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level or higher in Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. This experience must include experience that has equipped you with the necessary competencies to successfully perform the duties of this position. For this position specialized experience is defined as conducting scientific studies of land management and natural resources program including 1.) Conducting studies using fact-finding and evaluation techniques; 2.) Analyzing data associated with environmental studies. Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience: 1 year of graduate-level education related to this position.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: an equivalent combination of experience and education as described above (the total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify).
OR
Superior Academic Achievement in a bachelor's degree curriculum directly related to the work of the position. To qualify for superior academic achievement, you must have ONE of the following:1. Standing in the upper third of your college class or major subdivision at the time you apply;2. Grade point average of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent for all courses completed, either (a) at the time of application or (b) during the last 2 years of your undergraduate curriculum;3. B+ (3.5 on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent for all courses completed in a related discipline, either (a) at the time of application or (b) during the last 2 years of your undergraduate curriculum; OR 4. Election to membership in one of the national honorary scholastic societies that meets the requirements of the Association of College Honor Society;

GS-0401-09 Specialized Experience:

To qualify for the GS-09 level: You must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level or higher in Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. This experience must include experience that has equipped you with the necessary competencies to successfully perform the duties of this position. For this position specialized experience is defined as conducting scientific studies of land management and natural resources program including 1.) Conducting studies using fact-finding and evaluation techniques; 2.) Analyzing data associated with environmental studies; AND 3.) Develops informational/educational programs, flyers, or handouts to inform the general public on conservation efforts of an organization.

Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience: Possess two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters degree or masters or equivalent graduate degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of graduate-level education and experience, as described above, may be used to qualify for this position. This combination must have equipped you with the necessary knowledge and/or experience to successfully perform the duties of this position. Combinations of experience and education must total at least 100% as outlined in OPM Qualifications policy.

  • Physical Demands: Work requires long periods of standing; walking or riding horses/ATVs/motorcycles over rough terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, similar activities. Regular and recurring physical exertion related to conservation work requires walking on rough terrain, jumping ditches and furrows, or climbing steep banks.
  • Work Environment: Some work is performed in an office sitting. Other work is performed in the field, with exposure to extreme weather conditions, risks of falls, strains, and sprains, striking against brush and overhanging branches, and off-road travel in mountainous terrain. Safety equipment is required.
