Duties

Help

As an Assistant Professor, you will be responsible for the development and conduct of educational courses and programs within the department, in particular teaching English subject courses including writing and literature. You will be responsible for academic mentoring of students, producing research and engaging in scholarly activities, and assuming a share of departmental and institutional service activities.

The academic calendar of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy uses a trimester system in which classes are taught during eleven months of the year (July-June). Professors teach all eleven months, balancing requirements in teaching, service, and scholarship throughout the year.

The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated professional possessing integrity, stamina, and ingenuity. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, facilitating productive and enthusiastic cooperation and collaboration with colleagues in the Department of Humanities and across the institution.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • TRIAL PERIOD: This is an Excepted Service position. This job will be filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive service. Applicants selected for an excepted service position may be subject to a two-year trial period.
  • PCS/RELOCATION/RECRUITMENT: Permanent Change of Station (PCS), Relocation, and Recruitment Incentive authorization varies by position/selection.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a Full-Time Faculty Tenure-Track appointment in the Excepted Service, with an initial term not-to exceed 06/2024.  Reappointments to additional one or two year terms are possible.  If Tenure is achieved (after four to six years), employment will be made permanent, provided a satisfactory performance appraisal is received annually.

Qualifications

Qualification standards are used to determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.  The education, training, experience, or other requirements included in the qualification standards are minimum requirements. i.e., it would be unlikely that an applicant for employment would be able to perform satisfactorily in a particular position or occupational series if he or she did not possess these qualifications. Applicants will be assessed based on education, evidence of teaching effectiveness, quality of scholarship, and demonstrated service in an academic setting.

Minimum Educational Requirements:  To qualify for an Assistant Professor of English, you must hold a Doctoral degree in English or Comparative Literature from an accredited university.

To qualify for the Assistant Professor (English):

Your curriculum vitae and application materials (including college and graduate school transcripts) must show that you have the education and specialized experience necessary to teach English courses at the collegiate level.

Specialized Experience Requirements: 

  • Experience teaching composition at a college or university. Preferred specializations include global Anglophone literature, American literature (including literature by women, Latinx literature, or Native American literature), or maritime literature.

The preferred applicant will have a teaching repertoire including both conventional and innovative methods and should have a scholarly record (relative to the year of one’s doctorate) demonstrating the potential for future productivity.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

Education

Minimum Educational Requirements:  

To qualify for an Assistant Professor of English, you must hold a Doctoral degree in English or Comparative Literature from an accredited university.

  • Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position. OR
  • Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.
