Help
  • Assist in analyzing and reviewing administrative policies to ensure accuracy and consistency with regulations of the organization.
  • Conduct analytical studies and evaluate the effectiveness of administrative policies by gathering and organizing issues regarding those policies.
  • Assist in assembling data and consolidating and preparing reports for assigned projects.
  • Complete administrative duties as needed to ensure the smooth operation of the organization.
  • Type memorandum, reports, and other documents as assigned and review for correctness and conformance to organizational policies.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT:

To be eligible for the CMS Pathways - Summer Internship Program, an individual must be enrolled and seeking a degree (e.g., diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution/program on a full or half-time basis for the upcoming SPRING 2022 semester. Additional proof of enrollment for the upcoming SUMMER 2022 or FALL 2022 semester will be required before a final job offer can be extended. Click here for a definition of a qualifying education institution/program.

  • If you are graduating in the Spring 2022 semester, you are not eligible for the Summer Intern Program unless you are enrolled at least half time in a continuing education degree for the Summer 2022 or Fall 2022 semesters (i.e. Graduating in Spring 2022 with a Bachelor's and enrolling in a Master's Program of Summer or Fall 2022). Spring graduates who are not continuing their education Summer or Fall 2022 are encouraged to apply to our Recent Graduate announcements.
  • If your educational institution/program operates on a quarter system and Spring 2022 registration is not open at the time of application, you will need to provide proof of Spring 2022 registration upon selection.
  • A certificate program is defined as post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study (30 undergrad credits/18 grad school credits) that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.

Possess and maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on the unweighted 4.0 scale. GPA is based on current enrollment. GPA 2.95 is rounded to 3.0 and 2.94 is rounded to 2.9. NOTE: Students enrolled in a school or college that utilizes a Pass/Fail grading system are required to submit an unofficial transcript which must include the Institutions legend that documents the Pass/Fail equivalency.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • GS-05: Completion of a Bachelor's degree, equivalent degree, OR 4 academic years of education above high school that leads to a Bachelor's degree. Four full academic years above high school is defined as 120 credits or 180 quarter hours.
  • GS-07: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. OR eligibility under Superior Academic Achievement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university AND one of the following provisions of superior academic achievement:
  • Superior Academic Achievement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university AND one of the following provisions of superior academic achievement: NOTE: If you are claiming S.A.A. you must provide an unofficial transcript at the time of application that documents this claim:
    • A grade-point average of "B" (3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale) for all completed undergraduate courses or those completed in the last two years of undergraduate study. For example, 2.95 is rounded to 3.0, and 2.94 is rounded to 2.9.
    • A grade-point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale for all required courses completed in your major field of study, or those required courses in your major completed in the last two years of your undergraduate study.
    • Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university, or major subdivision.
    • Membership in a national honor society (other than freshman honor societies) recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT DUTY STATIONS:
If you are selected for a summer internship, your duty station will be established as part of your firm job offer from CMS (i.e. location negotiable). As of the closing date of this announcement, CMS anticipates that summer internship duties would be at performed at one of CMS' offices or 100% virtually/remotely.

  • If your internship is determined to be in-person, your duty station will be established as one of the following locations: Woodlawn, MD; Bethesda, MD; Washington D.C.; Atlanta, GA; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX; Denver, CO; Kansas City, MO; New York, NY; Philadelphia, PA; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA; or Puerto Rico.

Salary Range: All CMS Pathways Interns are hired at the step 1 of the grade in which they are selected. Your salary will be based upon the locality pay of your work site (duty station) as determined by law. For more information about federal civilian locality pay rates, see opm.gov

COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate: In accordance with Executive Order 14043, Federal employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 regardless of the employee's duty location or work arrangement (e.g., telework, remote work, etc.), subject to exceptions that may be required by law. If selected, you will be required to submit proof of vaccination by November 22, 2021 or before your entrance on duty if you are selected after the compliance date. Benefits:
*Summer Interns hired on a short-term basis (90 days or less) are not eligible for Federal benefits, i.e. health, life, retirement.
*Appointments made in duration in excess of 90 days and for full-time are eligible for health benefits.
*All summer Interns will accrue sick leave.
Schedule: Interns are eligible to work Full-time (40 hours per week) or Part-time (16 to 32 hours per week).
Duration of Appointment:
  • Summer Intern appointments begin May/June 2022 and will not exceed September 18, 2022.
  • Summer Intern appointments may be extended beyond the not-to-exceed (NTE) date at the agency's discretion.

APPOINTMENT EXTENSION OR CONVERSION:
  • Intern appointments may be extended or made indefinite at the discretion of management and the availability of a funded position.
  • Interns may be converted to the competitive service once they have completed all Pathways Internship requirements to include receipt of a degree. Interns who are converted to the competitive service may be placed into a position with an established career ladder and full performance level of GS-12.
  • Interns who are either extended or converted may be assigned a duty station in accordance with the established locations of CMS Offices, i.e. removed from 100% telework. A change to your duty station could result in a change to your salary if telework and CMS locations are in different geographic areas.

Expanded/Maximum Telework Posture: Due to COVID-19, the agency is currently in a maximum telework posture. If selected, you may be expected to telework upon your appointment. As employees are permitted to return to the office, you may be required to report to the duty station listed on this announcement within 30 calendar days of receiving notice to do so, even if your home/temporary telework site is located outside the local commuting area. Your position may be eligible for workplace flexibilities which may include remote work or telework options, and/or flexible work scheduling. These flexibilities may be requested in accordance with the HHS Workplace Flexibilities policy.
