Duties

Help

As a Geophysicist within the Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Center of the USGS, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Assisting in the acquisition of geophysical field and laboratory data
  • Operating a motor vehicle including 4-wheeling over difficult terrain
  • Using existing, in house software to process and analyze geophysical data to extract subsurface information.
  • Assisting in the development of realistic and reasonable geological models of areas of investigation based on geophysical data, core log analysis, and other available information
  • Applying established procedures and existing computer programs for quality assurance and quality control of geophysical data
  • Preparing illustrative material for talks and reports, authors and co-authors reports on results of investigations
  • Performing library scientific literature research
Physical Demands: During emergency response periods, training of personnel on new equipment, or field work, the scientist may be expected to hike distances of several kilometers over uneven terrain while carrying equipment. Field work may require the use of proper personal protective gear, working in dusty, hot, humid, and extreme cold environments, occasional off-road driving of 4-wheel drive vehicles, traveling to remote field sites in helicopters or small fixed wing planes, and/or boats. Lifting of equipment and objects weighing up to 20 kilograms may be necessary.

Work Environment : Field work may occasionally also involve encounters with snakes, bears, and other wilderness dangers. International field work may be conducted in culturally hostile areas. Note: Positions involving field work under arduous conditions and those involving on-site emergency response require a pre-employment medical examination to ensure the applicant can perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position, with or without accommodation.

Special Requirements For This Position

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).

B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. GS-07:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level:

Possess 1 year of successfully completed graduate level education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) in geophysics or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

**OR Possess one year of appropriate professional experience that is in or related to the duties of this position is qualifying if it is equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.

Examples of GS-5 level experience include assisting in collecting and processing geophysical data and assisting in preparing technical reports.

GS-09:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:

Possess 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree in geophysics or other directly related field of study or master's or equivalent graduate degree in geophysics or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

**OR Possess one year of appropriate professional experience in geophysics that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience include assisting in collecting and processing geophysical data; assisting in preparing technical reports; and assisting in planning and conducting airborne geophysical surveys.

GS-11:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

3 years of progressively higher level graduate education (54 semester hours,81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. degree in geophysics or other directly related field of study or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in geophysics or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. **OR one year of appropriate professional experience in geophysics that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience include collecting and processing geophysical data; planning and conducting airborne geophysical surveys; processing data using airborne geophysical processing software; and writing technical reports and data releases.
