Summary
The Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate at NASA Lyndon B. This position is responsible for assuring the Safety, Reliability, and Quality Assurance for aerospace and aeronautical programs. Examples include: assessments of hazard reports; and analyses, evaluations, and approving failure modes.
Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
Conducts specialized studies on flight vehicles, which may include overall and individual major systems components, and additional airborne equipment encompassed in the structure, to ensure their safety, suitability, and effectiveness in operation.
Performs detailed assessments of hazard reports and safety data packages for assigned systems/elements, determines compliance with design and operations safety requirements.
Understands, visualizes, analyzes, designs, and operates aerospace vehicles and structures operating within, above, and beyond the earth's atmosphere.
Performs multiple functions which may include: planning, research, design, development, test and evaluation, cost analyses, program and project management.
Advises on, coordinates, monitors, maintains surveillance over, and/or performs duties concerned with the Safety, Reliability, and Quality Assurance program for aerospace and aeronautical programs.

Qualifications
In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
GS-12: To qualify at the GS-12 level, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level; working on a team involved with executing safety, reliability, and maintainability assurance for hardware; performing hardware engineering, assurance, safety and the development of hazard analysis, Failure Modes Effects Analysis, and/or risk assessment for flight systems; participating in an aerospace or aeronautical program supporting safety and reliability activities.
GS-13: To qualify at the GS-13 level, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level; reviewing and approving hazard reports and safety data packages; approving and identifying risk assessments for aerospace and/or aeronautical programs; leading teams in Safety and Mission Assurance activities such as, review of hazards, FMEA, Safety Review Panels, Risk reviews.

Education
You must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.
*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
