As a Interdisciplinary Biologist/Physical Scientist within the Data Preservation Information and Lab Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Work independently and lead teams (including members from other Federal Agencies, State Geological Surveys, professional organizations, private industry and academia) to research and evaluate technologies and standards used in earth and biological sciences to define requirements for new methods for data collection, delivery, and integration.
Use scientific domain (physical and biological sciences) and information science knowledge and experience to develop, plan and implement projects and Products, performing analyses of existing methodologies, technologies and standards and defining new procedures and/or Products to facilitate Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) USGS data and samples.
Provide technical direction on Product requirements to developer teams.
Monitor effectiveness and use of Products and implement changes to improve services to stakeholders (scientists, data/collection managers, decision-makers, public, industry, academia).
Provide training to scientists and other stakeholders on the use of the Products and serve as subject matter expert on the Products
Provide advice and training on management of scientific sample/specimen collections and associated data, standards, and community conventions, within USGS and to scientists in other agencies, academia, museums, professional organizations, and industry.
Expertise with scientific metadata tools, resources, and standards (e.g. ISO, CSDGM, mdJSON) to inform the development of new tools and application of existing resources.
Experience with development (coding) and documentation (Git Repository) in modern and scientifically relevant languages (e.g. Python, SQL, JavaScript etc.) which will be used to inform the development of Products that advance data management.
Foster a positive, productive, inclusive, and collaborative work environment when engaging with a variety of stakeholders.
Prepare presentations, reports, publications, and briefings for technical and non-technical audiences, including leadership and stakeholders, to provide feedback and status updates and advocate for an action.

A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT for Physical Scientist, GS-1301: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science (including earth sciences), engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
B. A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. In addition to the basic education requirements described above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:
Possess one year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
Examples of such experience may include independently leading collaborative teams of physical and/or biological scientists, data managers and software developers to create innovative ways to ingest, serve and connect data, samples, publications, people, and institutions. The duty station for this position is Lakewood, Colorado.
