Summary

As a Biologist (Computational Bionformatics) you will serve as a Project Leader, responsible for collaborating with a team of microbiologists and veterinarians with the goal of developing new methods of data analysis, creating databases and pipelines for new analyses, and interacting with external and internal customers to transfer, implement, and/or adapt new technologies to veterinary biological product evaluation at the Center for Veterinary Biologics.

Duties

  • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Designs and develops program solutions, providing leadership and technical guidance on databases and software for next generation sequencing, microarrays and other new technologies.
  • Recognizes vulnerabilities and inefficiencies in laboratory databases and information management systems and creatively develop plans to solve such issues.
  • Works on advanced laboratory processes such as next-generation sequencing. Analyzes data to provide modifications and trouble-shooting input on laboratory processes.
  • Plans, organizes and provides training to industry, state, Federal and university personnel during meetings or training courses.
  • Presents scientific data related to veterinary biological products at local, regional, national and international meetings, and publishes material in appropriate scientific peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
BASIC REQUIREMENT:

Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position;

OR

Combination of education and experience:
post high school education with courses equivalent to a major, which is defined as 24 semester/36 quarter hours, in the biological sciences, agriculture, natural resources management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position, PLUS appropriate experience or additional course work. The quality of the combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four-year course of study with a major as described above.

FOR THE GS-11 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-9 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:

- Providing biological data analyses that impacted vaccine design, individualized medical treatments, genetic counseling, or similar outcomes.
- Applying knowledge of eukaryotic and prokaryotic biological systems in the capacity as a subject matter expert to internal and/or external customers and staff through verbal and written communications related to genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics or related laboratory technologies such as PCR, next generation sequencing microarrays.
- Using computational biology to develop and/or apply computational solutions utilizing coding, pipeline development, databases, and high-performance computing for the analysis of vaccines, diagnostic kits, antibodies, diseases, tissues, forensics, personalized medicine, genetic counseling, or epidemiological tracing.
- Using processes for the discovery, evaluation and/or implementation of current and new technologies and methodologies through the use of literature searches, collaborations and verbal and written communications with other subject matter experts and colleagues;

OR

3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Biology, computational biology, bioinformatics, genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.
