Duties

Help
  • Instructs doctoral and master of science students in basic disciplines of all programs offered by the department and graduate courses in Orbital Mechanics and Dynamics.
  • Communicating both theory and applications representing the current state of knowledge in this area of expertise.
  • Develops research topics and advises students in Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and in other departments of AFIT as the need arises
  • Carries out research in Orbital Mechanics and Dynamics and presents the research results to the scientific community by way of oral presentation and through publication in scholarly professional journals.
  • Provides services to the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and other departments at AFIT and to Air Force organizations.
  • Contributes to curriculum, including the development of courses and instruction of courses in Orbital Mechanics and Dynamics, and to the planning of student programs.
  • Participates in committees and with faculty governance.

Qualifications

This is a Tenure track position: Academic tenure is based upon performance and approval of the faculty and may be considered after the initial or subsequent 3-year period. Selectee may be offered an initial appointment with tenure if their academic credentials warrant such an action.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
At the Assistant Professor Rank: For an initial appointment to the academic rank of Assistant Professor, applicants should have a strong potential for both teaching and research at the graduate level. Applicants should have a distinguished academic record and the background, commitment, and desire to teach graduate classes, conduct research, and publish.

At the Associate Professor Rank: In addition to the criteria for an Assistant Professor, an initial appointment to the academic rank of Associate Professor must be based on convincing evidence that the individual has demonstrated excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. The candidate must have 5 years of significant professional experience after having earned the doctoral degree. This will normally include no fewer than 3 years of full-time, university-level teaching at the Assistant Professor rank or higher. Alternatively, for those with fewer than 3 years of teaching experience, the requirement is 6 years of significant professional experience with research credentials normally expected of a full Professor.


  • ?At the time of hiring, applicants must possess a doctoral degree earned from an accredited institute or university in Astronautical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field of engineering, mathematics, or physics.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and expertly (in English) both verbally and in writing.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Possess subject matter expertise in the areas of Orbital Mechanics and Dynamics as applied to practical experience of analyzing, designing, developing, testing, integrating or implementing astronautical space systems.
  • Possess experience teaching engineering classes at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • Possess experience in mentoring and advising students in research topics and education plans for an advanced degree.
  • Possess experience in developing proposals to a variety of sponsoring agencies for funding and support the pursuit of original and novel research and/or technology topics.
  • Have provided publications, professional talks, conference presentations, books, peer-reviewed articles, and other literature credits that establish an expertise in research areas related to engineering disciplines.

Education

You MUST provide original copies of ALL OFFICIAL transcripts for degrees being pursued or obtained (or letter of degree completion if an OFFICIAL transcript is not available due to recent graduation) to support your educational claims as stated in your curriculum vitae. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Legible photocopies of OFFICIAL transcripts are acceptable for initial application submission. However, if selected, you will be required to provide (original) copies of your OFFICIAL transcripts. For a transcript to be considered OFFICIAL, it should be printed on university letterhead and the registrar's official seal/signature must appear on the transcript. Your transcripts must also reflect the degree awarded/conferred date. Transcripts labeled UNOFFICIAL will not be accepted.

Note: Ensure you include ALL transcripts to support your educational claims as stated in your curriculum vitae (resume) even if not required for this position.

FOREIGN EDUCATION:
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the educational requirements. However, you must show proof that the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in a conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying in the form of an "official" statement of U.S. equivalency from a Department of Education approved (non-federal) agency (i.e. AICE, NACES), who will complete a U.S. Standard of Education Conversion.

The position will be an initial three year appointment with a one-year probationary period, with the potential for continued reappointment for additional 3-5 year terms.
